Land Rover Engines
Finding the right Land Rover engine
Land Rover has changed engine suppliers with each change of owner. The Rover V8 lasted until 2004, the 2003–2005 Range Rover took a BMW V8, Jaguar’s AJ-V8 took over from 2006 and became the 5.0L in 2010, the supercharged 3.0L V6 followed in 2014, and since 2018 the range has moved to JLR’s own Ingenium fours and sixes — with BMW V8s back in the newest Range Rovers.
That makes the model year decisive. The 4.4L in a 2005 Range Rover and the 4.4L in a 2006 are different engines from different makers, and a 2010–2013 5.0L is a different build from a later one. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Land Rover vehicles
Rover V8 4.0L and 4.6L (to 2004)
The Discovery 3.9L and 4.0L (1994–2002) and 4.6L (2003–2004), the Range Rover P38 4.0 SE and 4.6 HSE (1995–2002) and the 1997 Defender 90. The 4.0L and 4.6L share a bore and differ in stroke, and the GEMS-managed engines to 1999 and the Bosch-managed ones from 1999 have intakes and ECUs that do not interchange. Slipped cylinder liners, and coolant loss leading to overheating and head-gasket failure, are widely reported.
Freelander 2.5L KV6 (2002–2005)
The only engine in the US Freelander. Slipped cast-iron liners, and thermostat and expansion-tank failures that led to overheating, head-gasket failure and warped blocks, are widely reported, and an owners’ class action followed.
BMW and Jaguar V8s (2003–2009)
The 2003–2005 Range Rover has a BMW 4.4L M62. From 2006 it and the Range Rover Sport have Jaguar’s AJ41 4.4L or the supercharged 4.2L (2006–2009), and the LR3 has the 4.4L (2005–2009) or a 4.0L Ford V6 (2005–2007). The BMW and Jaguar 4.4Ls are unrelated engines.
5.0L V8 and supercharged 3.0L V6 (2010–2022)
The Jaguar 5.0L, naturally aspirated and supercharged, in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport from 2010, the LR4 (2010–2013), the Velar (2019–2020) and the Defender (from around 2022); and the supercharged 3.0L V6 in the LR4 (2014–2016), Range Rover and Range Rover Sport (2014–2019), Discovery (2017–2020) and Velar. The 5.0L engines built from 2010 to 2013 are known for worn timing-chain guides and tensioners, heard as a tick or knock from the front of the engine, and JLR revised the chains, guides and tensioners for the 2010, 2011 and 2014 model years. Recall 19V040000 covers 2019 V6 and V8 cars whose crankshaft pulley bolt could break and cause engine failure, and 21V635000 fuel-flange cracks on the 2010–2016 LR4 and 2010–2013 Range Rover Sport.
Ford 2.0L turbo and Ingenium 2.0L fours
The Ford-based 2.0L turbo (VIN code G) in the Evoque (2012–2017) and Discovery Sport (2015–2017), replaced by the Ingenium 2.0L (code X) from 2018 — now the P250 and P300 in the Evoque, Discovery Sport, Velar, Discovery (2018–2020) and Defender, and the P400e plug-in hybrid in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport (around 2020–2022). The LR2 is the odd one out, with Volvo’s 3.2L straight-six (2008–2012).
Ingenium straight-six, Td6 and BMW V8s (2016 on)
The 3.0L Td6 diesel in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport (2016–2021); the 3.0L Ingenium straight-six 48-volt mild hybrid (P360 and P400) in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport from around 2020, the Defender from 2020, the Velar from around 2021 and the Discovery from 2021; and BMW 4.4L V8s in the Range Rover from 2022 and Range Rover Sport from 2023. Recalls on the straight-six: 21V424000 (2020–2021 Defender engine shut-off while driving), 23V044000 (Defender and Range Rover Sport cam-carrier oil leak) and the software recalls 26V248000 and 26V599000 for the mild hybrid’s DC/DC converter, which can cause a loss of drive.

FAQ
Used Land Rover engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Land Rover has?
It depends on the year. On most Land Rovers built up to 2016 the engine is the seventh character of the VIN and the transmission the eighth; on the LR2, Evoque and Discovery Sport of 2008–2016, and on every model from 2017, the engine is the eighth. On a 2010–2016 Range Rover, for example, D is the 5.0L and E the supercharged 5.0L; on an Evoque, G is the Ford 2.0L turbo and X the Ingenium. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Is the 4.4L in a 2005 Range Rover the same as the one in a 2006?
No. The 2003–2005 Range Rover has a BMW M62 V8 with a ZF five-speed; from 2006 it has Jaguar’s AJ41 4.4L, or the supercharged 4.2L, with the ZF six-speed. They are different engines from different makers, and the seventh character of the VIN tells them apart: 1 for the BMW, 5 for the Jaguar 4.4L, 3 for the supercharged 4.2L.
Does a used Land Rover engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
