Finding the right Honda engine
Honda builds a small number of engine families and uses each one widely. The K-series four-cylinder has powered the Accord, CR-V, Element and Civic Si, and the J-series V6 is shared by the Accord, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline.
Within a family, each model and year has its own version, identified by a code such as K24A4 or J35Z2. Two engines of the same size can differ in output, emissions equipment and cylinder deactivation, so we match the code. It is stamped on the engine block, and we can confirm it from your VIN.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Honda vehicles
K-series four-cylinder — 2.0L and 2.4L
Honda’s chain-driven twin-cam four, from 2002: the CR-V (2002–2016), Element, Accord (2003–2017) and Civic Si, plus the turbocharged 2.0L in the 2018–2022 Accord and the Civic Type R.
L-series — 1.5L and 1.5L turbo
The 1.5L in the Fit, and the turbocharged 1.5L in the Civic from 2016, the CR-V from 2017 and the Accord from 2018.
R-series — 1.8L
The single-cam 1.8L in the 2006–2015 Civic and the 2016–2022 HR-V.
J-series V6 — 3.0L and 3.5L
The V6 in the Accord (1998–2017), Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline and Passport. Many versions have Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts off cylinders when cruising.
Earlier four-cylinders — D and F series
The 1.6L and 1.7L D-series in the Civic through 2005, and the 2.2L and 2.3L F-series in the Accord through 2002.
Hybrid engines
The single-motor system in the early Insight and Civic Hybrid, and the two-motor system in the Accord Hybrid from 2014, the CR-V Hybrid from 2020 and the Civic Hybrid.

How do I find my Honda’s engine code?
The code — K24A4, for example — is stamped on the engine block. If you can’t find it, send us your VIN and we will tell you exactly which engine your vehicle has.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Does a Honda V6 have a timing belt?
Yes — the J-series V6 uses a timing belt, which has a replacement interval. Ask your installer about fitting a new belt and water pump while the engine is out of the vehicle.
