Mitsubishi Transmissions

Finding the right Mitsubishi transmission

Mitsubishi built its own INVECS-II four- and five-speed automatics through the 2000s, then moved its four-cylinder cars and crossovers to Jatco CVTs from 2008, while the V6 Outlander kept a Jatco six-speed. The Lancer Evolution and Ralliart had their own manuals and a six-speed dual-clutch.

An Outlander or Outlander Sport may have either of two different Jatco CVTs depending on the year, and the V6 and four-cylinder versions of the same model do not share a transmission. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Mitsubishi vehicles

F4A42 and F4A51 four-speeds

Mitsubishi’s INVECS-II four-speed automatics: the F4A42 behind the 2.4L in the Galant, Eclipse and Lancer, and the F4A51 behind the V6 in the 1999–2003 Galant and 2000–2005 Eclipse GT. The 2001–2006 Montero used a four-speed and then a five-speed INVECS-II.

F5A51 five-speed Sportronic

The five-speed automatic behind the V6 in the 2004–2012 Galant, 2006–2012 Eclipse GT and 2004–2011 Endeavor.

Jatco CVTs

The JF011E in the Lancer from 2008, the four-cylinder Outlander from 2008 and the Outlander Sport from 2011; the JF016E in the four-cylinder Outlander from its 2015 facelift, the Eclipse Cross, the 2022-on Outlander and later Outlander Sports; and the smaller JF015E in the Mirage. Hesitation, judder, loss of power and a “service transmission” warning are the usual owner complaints, and recall 16V563 reprogrammed the Outlander Sport’s CVT software for delayed acceleration.

JF613E six-speed

The Jatco six-speed automatic behind the 3.0L V6 in the 2007–2020 Outlander. The V6 and four-cylinder Outlanders of the same year do not share a transmission.

TC-SST dual-clutch

The six-speed twin-clutch in the Lancer Evolution X MR and the Lancer Ralliart. Failures of its mechatronic unit are widely reported.

Manuals

The W5M51 five-speed in the Lancer Evolution VIII and IX, a six-speed in their MR versions, and a five-speed in the Evolution X GSR.

FAQ

Used Mitsubishi transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Mitsubishi has?

The vehicle information code plate under the hood lists the transaxle or transmission model code next to the engine code. Online VIN decoders only partly cover Mitsubishi, so send us the full 17-character VIN and we will identify the unit.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?

A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Which CVT does my Lancer or Outlander have?

The 2008-on Lancer, the four-cylinder Outlander from 2008 to 2014 and the early Outlander Sport use the Jatco JF011E. The four-cylinder Outlander moved to the JF016E with its 2015 facelift, the Eclipse Cross and the 2022-on Outlander use it too, and later Outlander Sports followed. The Mirage has the smaller JF015E. They are not interchangeable, so we confirm from the VIN.

Does a used Mitsubishi transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
