BMW Engines
Finding the right BMW engine
BMW names its engines by family code, and the code matters more than the size. A “3.0L six” can be a naturally aspirated M54 or N52, a twin-turbo N54, a single-turbo N55 or a B58, and none of them swaps for another. The 4.4L V8s are the same story: the M62, N62 and N63 are three unrelated engines.
BMW also revises engines part-way through a run — the N63 has had three technical updates since 2013 — so the year matters as much as the code. The VIN does not encode the engine, but BMW’s build record for each VIN does. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most BMW vehicles
M54 and N52 straight-sixes
The naturally aspirated 3.0L sixes: the M54 from 2000 to 2006 (X5 3.0i, 2001–2006) and the N52, with its N51 variant, from 2006 to 2015 (X5 3.0si and xDrive30i, 2007–2010). The N52’s PCV blow-by heater was recalled for a fire risk.
N54, N55 and B58 turbo sixes
The twin-turbo N54 from 2007 to around 2013, the single-turbo N55 from 2010 to 2019 (X5 35i, 2011–2018) and the B58 from 2016, updated in 2019 and given a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in its latest version (X5 40i from 2019). The N55’s oil-filter-housing gasket, charge pipe and electric water pump are its known weak points.
N20, B46 and B48 four-cylinders
The 2.0L turbo fours: the N20 and N26 from 2012 to 2017, and the B46 and B48 from 2017, the B46 being the lower-emissions version. The N20 is the engine in the X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid (2016–2018); its timing-chain guides are its known fault.
M62 and N62 V8s
The M62 from 1998 to 2005 (X5 4.4i and 4.6is to 2003) and the N62 from 2002 to 2010 (X5 4.4i, 4.8is and 4.8i, 2004–2010). The N62’s valve-stem seals and coolant transfer pipe are the faults that most often send owners looking for an engine.
N63, S63 and S68 twin-turbo V8s
The N63 from 2009, with technical updates in 2013–2014, 2016 and 2019 (X5 xDrive50i and M50i, 2011–2023); the S63 in the X5 M through 2023; and the S68 with 48-volt mild hybrid from 2022, in the X5 M60i and X5 M Competition from 2024. Early N63s are known for oil consumption, timing chains and turbos.
M57 and N57 diesels
The two 3.0L straight-six diesels BMW sold in the US: the twin-turbo M57 from 2009 to 2013 and the N57 from 2014 to 2018, both in the X5 xDrive35d. The newer B57 was never sold in a US X5.

FAQ
Used BMW engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my BMW has?
The engine code is cast into the block and recorded on the build sheet BMW keeps for each VIN. The VIN itself does not encode the engine, so a decode that pulls BMW’s build data is the reliable route. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the engine and the version it was built to.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Is a used N63 a good buy?
It depends on the version and its history. The first N63 (2009–2013) is known for heavy oil consumption, turbo failures, valve-stem seals and stretched timing chains. BMW’s Customer Care Package of 2014–2015 replaced injectors, the battery and the crankcase vent, tested oil consumption and replaced engines that failed the test, and the Bang class-action settlement gave 2009–2014 N63 cars under 10 years and 120,000 miles free oil-consumption tests, oil changes and engine repair or replacement. The updated N63TU still used oil and was covered by the Isley settlement. Ask for the service history of any used N63 and prefer one that has had the Customer Care Package work.
Does a used BMW engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
