Finding the right BMW transmission
Almost every BMW automatic since 2000 has been a ZF: the 5HP five-speeds to about 2003, the 6HP six-speeds from 2002 to around 2013, and the 8HP eight-speeds from 2010. The exception is the GM 5L40-E five-speed that BMW fitted behind its six-cylinder engines from 2000 to 2006.
Each family comes in several sizes rated for different engines — an 8HP45 and an 8HP70 do not swap — and BMW gives them its own labels, so the same unit can go by two names. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

The transmissions behind most BMW vehicles
Five-speeds: ZF 5HP and GM 5L40-E
The ZF 5HP18, 5HP19 and 5HP24 sat behind BMW’s larger engines until about 2003 — the 5HP24, which BMW calls the A5S 440Z, is the automatic behind the M62 V8 in the 2000–2003 X5 4.4i and 4.6is. Behind the sixes from 2000 to 2006 BMW used a General Motors 5L40-E instead, labelled A5S 360R or A5S 390R; it is the automatic in every X5 3.0i.
ZF 6HP six-speeds
The 6HP19, 6HP26 and 6HP28 from 2002 to around 2011–2013: the 6HP26 (BMW GA6HP26Z) behind the N62 V8s in the X5, and ZF six-speeds behind the E70 X5’s six and M57 diesel. Fluid seepage at the mechatronic sealing sleeve is the family’s known fault.
ZF 8HP45 and 8HP70 eight-speeds
The first eight-speeds, from 2010 to 2018: the 8HP45 behind the N55 six in the X5 35i and the 8HP70 behind the N63 V8 in the X5 50i, with the 8HP75 in M specification in the F85 X5 M.
ZF 8HP51 and 8HP76 eight-speeds
The second-generation eight-speeds, from 2016, which took over from the 8HP45 and 8HP70 behind the B58 sixes and the later N63 V8s. Since 2023 the family has carried the electric motor for BMW’s 48-volt mild hybrids inside the transmission.
Hybrid-integrated 8HP
The X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid (2016–2018) carries its electric motor inside the 8HP, and the 48-volt X5 40i and M60i from 2024 do the same; the xDrive45e (2021–2023) and xDrive50e (2024 on) plug-in hybrids also have their own hybrid drivetrains. None of these units interchanges with the plain 8HP behind the same engine.
Manuals
In the X5, only the E53 3.0i (2001–2006) had a manual — a five-speed early in the run and a six-speed later — and every X5 since 2007 has been an automatic. Tell us which gearbox your car has, as the manual and the 5L40-E sit behind the same M54 engine.

FAQ
Used BMW transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my BMW has?
It depends on the engine and the model year, and in most years one model carried two or three units. BMW’s own labels (A5S 440Z, GA6HP26Z) also differ from ZF’s, so a parts listing can name the same unit two ways. Send us your VIN and we will identify it from BMW’s build record.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?
A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
My 6HP is seeping fluid. Does it need replacing?
Usually not. Seepage at the mechatronic sealing sleeve, where the wiring passes through the case, is covered by a BMW bulletin for 6HP19, 6HP21, 6HP26 and 6HP28 units built to April 2008, and BMW replaces the sleeve only when the fluid loss is substantial. A transmission that has been run low on fluid is a different matter, and we can quote for one.
Does a used BMW transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
