Land Rover Transmissions
Finding the right Land Rover transmission
The Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, LR3, LR4 and Defender have had ZF automatics throughout — the 4HP22 and 4HP24, then the 5HP24, the 6HP26 and 6HP28, and the 8HP eight-speeds since 2013. The transverse models are the exceptions: the Freelander had a Jatco five-speed, the LR2 and early Evoque an Aisin six-speed, and the Evoque and Discovery Sport since 2014 the ZF 9HP48 nine-speed.
The ZF units were built in four-wheel-drive versions for Land Rover and matched to each engine, so the 6HP26 in a 2007 Range Rover is not the 6HP28 in a 2011. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Land Rover vehicles
ZF 4HP22, 4HP24 and 5HP24
The four-speeds behind the Rover V8 — the 4HP22 in the Discovery to 2002, the Range Rover P38 4.0 to 1999 and the 1997–1998 Defender 90 V8; the 4HP24 in the P38 4.6, the P38 4.0 from 1999 and the 2003–2004 Discovery 4.6 — and the 5HP24 five-speed behind the BMW V8 in the 2003–2005 Range Rover.
ZF 6HP26 and 6HP28
Four-wheel-drive versions of the ZF six-speed: the 6HP26 in the LR3 (2005–2009), Range Rover (2006–2009) and Range Rover Sport (2006–2009), and the 6HP28 behind the 5.0L in the LR4 (2010–2013), Range Rover (2010–2012) and Range Rover Sport (2010–2013). Both were filled for life at the factory, and shift and valve-body problems are widely reported. Recall 05V502000 covers the parking pawl guide plate on the 2006 Range Rover.
ZF 8HP70 and 8HP45
The eight-speeds in every Range Rover, Discovery and Defender since 2013: the 8HP70 in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport from 2013, the LR4 V6 (2014–2016), the Discovery from 2017, the Defender from 2020 and the six-cylinder Velar, and the 8HP45 in the four-cylinder Velar. The 2022-on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport use an 8HP as well.
ZF 9HP48 nine-speed
The transverse nine-speed in the Evoque from 2014 and the Discovery Sport from 2015.
Aisin TF-80SC and TF-81SC
The Aisin six-speed shared with Volvo: the TF-80SC in the LR2 (2008–2015) and the TF-81SC in the 2012–2013 Evoque, before the nine-speed arrived.
Jatco JF506E (Freelander)
The five-speed automatic in the 2002–2005 Freelander. Shift-solenoid failures are widely reported, and are often misdiagnosed as a failed transmission — worth ruling out before the unit is replaced.

FAQ
Used Land Rover transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Land Rover has?
On most Land Rovers built up to 2016 the eighth character of the VIN identifies the transmission and the seventh the engine. On the LR2, Evoque and Discovery Sport, and on every model from 2017, the eighth character is the engine, and the transmission follows from the engine and year. Send us the full VIN and we will identify the unit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?
A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Is the ZF six-speed in a Jaguar the same as the one in my Land Rover?
Not as fitted. Land Rover used four-wheel-drive versions of the 6HP26 and 6HP28, matched to its engines — the 6HP26 behind the 4.4L and supercharged 4.2L, the 6HP28 behind the 5.0L — so we match the unit to the vehicle it is going into, not just to the ZF number. Send us your VIN.
Does a used Land Rover transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
