Jeep Transmissions
Finding the right Jeep transmission
Jeep has used Chrysler’s own automatics, a Mercedes five-speed, ZF eight- and nine-speeds and a long list of manuals, and the Wrangler alone has had a dozen different units since 1997.
Which one a Jeep has depends on the model, the engine and the year, and in most years one model carried two or three. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Jeep vehicles
42RE, 45RFE and 545RFE
Chrysler’s four- and five-speed automatics behind the straight-six and the V8s in the Grand Cherokee (1999–2011), Liberty and Commander.
42RLE
The four-speed automatic in the Wrangler and Liberty from 2003 to 2011.
W5A580 (NAG1)
The Mercedes-designed five-speed in the Grand Cherokee (2005–2013), Commander, Liberty and the 2012–2018 Wrangler.
ZF eight-speeds
The 845RE, 850RE, 8HP70 and 8HP75 in the Grand Cherokee from 2014 and the Wrangler and Gladiator from 2018, sized for the engine in front of them.
Nine-speed and front-wheel-drive units
The 948TE nine-speed in the Cherokee, Renegade and Compass, and the earlier CVT and six-speeds in the Compass and Patriot.
Manuals
The AX-15, NV3550 and NSG370 behind the Wrangler’s six-cylinders, and the six-speed in the Wrangler JL and Gladiator.

FAQ
Used Jeep transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Jeep has?
It depends on the model, engine and model year, and one model year often had more than one unit. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.
Are the ZF eight-speeds interchangeable?
No. The 845RE, 850RE, 8HP70 and 8HP75 are built for different engines and torque levels. Match the unit to the engine, not just the number of gears.
Does a replacement need programming?
On the eight- and nine-speeds, yes. They are controlled by software that has to be matched to the vehicle, and many shift complaints are fixed by an update alone.
Does a used Jeep transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
