Audi Engines
Finding the right Audi engine
Audi’s engines are shared across the Volkswagen group, so one family turns up in several Audis and in Volkswagens too. The turbocharged fours have gone from the 1.8T through the 2.0T FSI to three generations of EA888 2.0T TFSI, and the V6s have moved from the 2.8L and 3.0L 30-valve engines to direct-injection, supercharged and turbocharged 3.0s.
That means a “2.0T” is not one engine. The 2.0T FSI of 2005–2008 and the three generations of 2.0T TFSI that followed are different engines, each identified by a three-letter code such as CAEB. Give us the code and your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Audi vehicles
1.8T 20-valve (EA113)
The 1.8L turbo four in the A4 from 1997 to 2005, in AEB, ATW, AWM and AMB versions. Known for oil sludge when oil changes were stretched, and for ignition coils.
2.0T FSI (EA113)
The direct-injection 2.0L turbo in the 2005.5–2008 A4 (BPG, BWT) and the 2006–2007 A3. Cam-follower wear, the PCV valve and carbon build-up are its known faults.
2.0T TFSI (EA888)
Three generations in the A4, A5, Q5, A3 and TT: Gen 1 (2009–2012; oil consumption and timing-chain tensioner), Gen 2 (2013–2016; tensioner) and Gen 3 (2017–2019), updated as the Gen 3B/evo with 12-volt mild hybrid from 2020.
V6s
The 2.8L 12- and 30-valve and the 3.0L 30-valve (AVK) of the B5 and B6 era, the 3.2L FSI (BKH, CALA), the supercharged 3.0 TFSI (EA837, 2009–2017) in the S4, S5, Q5 and A6, and the turbocharged 3.0 TFSI (EA839) from 2018. The RS4 and RS5 use a 2.9L twin-turbo.
4.2L V8
The naturally aspirated V8 in the 2004–2008 S4 and the 2007–2008 RS4.
3.0L V6 TDI
Audi’s US diesel, in the Q7, A6, A7, A8 and Q5 from 2009 to 2016 and subject to the diesel-emissions buyback and fix. The A4 was never sold with a diesel in the US.

FAQ
Used Audi engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Audi has?
Audi identifies each engine by a three-letter code such as CAEB. It is on the sticker in the spare-wheel well and in the service book, and on the engine itself. The VIN alone does not give it, so send us the code and the VIN together and we will confirm the exact version.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Which EA888 do I have?
It depends on the year and, for 2013, on the drive type: Gen 1 (CAEB) in 2009–2012 A4s and 2013 front-wheel-drive and manual cars, Gen 2 in 2013 quattro automatics and all 2014–2016 cars, Gen 3 from 2017 and the mild-hybrid Gen 3B/evo from 2020. The generations are different engines and are not interchangeable, so check the code on the sticker before ordering.
Does a used Audi engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
