Finding the right Buick transmission
Buick has used GM’s front-wheel-drive automatics almost exclusively: the 4T65-E four-speed behind the 3800 and 3.9L V6s, the 6T40 and 6T70 six-speed families from the late 2000s, the 9T50 and 9T65 nine-speeds, a CVT in the smallest models and an eight-speed in the newest Enclave. The rear-drive Rainier’s 4L60-E is the exception.
The same units went into Chevrolets, GMCs and Cadillacs, which helps supply, but each family comes in more than one size and in front- and all-wheel-drive forms. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Buick vehicles
4T65-E and 4T45-E four-speeds
The 4T65-E behind the 3800 and 3.9L V6s in the Park Avenue, LeSabre, Regal, LaCrosse and Lucerne, and the related 4T45-E. The rear-drive Rainier used the 4L60-E instead.
6T40 and 6T45
GM’s lighter six-speed family, in the 2013–2022 Encore, the Verano and the 2.4L Regal.
6T70 and 6T75
The heavier six-speeds in the LaCrosse, the 2.0L turbo Regal, the 2008–2017 Enclave and the Envision. The 3-5-R wave plate failure and GM’s Special Coverage 14404 belong to this family.
9T50 and 9T65 nine-speeds
In the last Regal, the 2018–2024 Enclave and the newer Envision. GM ran a replacement pilot for the 9T65 on 2018–2021 Enclaves after harsh-shift and shudder complaints.
VT40 CVT
The continuously variable transmission in the Encore GX and Envista, behind the 1.2L and 1.3L three-cylinder turbos. All-wheel-drive Encore GXs with the 1.3L use a nine-speed automatic instead.
GM eight-speed
The automatic behind the 2.5L turbo in the third-generation Enclave from 2025, order code MF8.

FAQ
Used Buick transmission questions, answered
How do I find out which transmission my Buick has?
The transmission’s RPO code is on the Service Parts Identification label — in the glove box on older models, or in a QR code on the driver’s door pillar on recent ones. The VIN gives us the model year and engine, which narrows it down the rest of the way. Send us the VIN, and a photo of the label if you have one.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?
A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Is there a GM program for my Buick’s transmission?
Two are worth knowing. Special Coverage 14404 covered the 3-5-R wave plate in the 6T70 and 6T75 on 2007–2009 vehicles, including the early Enclave. And GM ran a 9T65 replacement pilot on 2018–2021 Enclaves that ended in September 2021; bulletin 20-NA-136 now calls for diagnosis instead of automatic replacement. Neither covers the Encore’s 6T40. Check your VIN with a dealer before you buy.
Does a used Buick transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
