Buick Engines
Finding the right Buick engine
Buick’s engines are GM engines, shared with Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac: the 3800 V6 of the Park Avenue and LeSabre, the 3.6L V6 of the Enclave and LaCrosse, the Ecotec fours of the Regal and Verano and the small turbos of the Encore. The same family turning up across several divisions widens the pool of good used engines for any one Buick.
It also means an engine is identified by its RPO code, not its size. A “3.6L” in a 2008 Enclave is an LY7, in a 2010 Enclave an LLT and in a 2018 Enclave an LFY, and one does not go in place of another. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Buick vehicles
3800 V6 — Series II and Series III
The L36 and the supercharged L67 in the Park Avenue, LeSabre and Regal GS into the mid-2000s, then the Series III L26 in the LaCrosse and Lucerne of the later 2000s. Buick’s best-known engine, and still in demand.
Pushrod 3.4L, 3.5L and 3.9L V6s
The 3.4L LA1 in the Century and Rendezvous, the 3.5L LX9 in the Rendezvous and Terraza, and the 3.9L LZ9 in the Lucerne. The Lucerne also had the 4.6L Northstar V8 (LD8), and the Rainier used GM’s 4.2L inline-six and 5.3L V8.
3.6L High Feature V6
The port-injected LY7 in the Rendezvous, LaCrosse CXS and 2008 Enclave; the direct-injected LLT in the 2009–2017 Enclave and briefly in the LaCrosse; the LFX and then the LGX in later LaCrosses; and the LFY in the 2018–2024 Enclave. Five versions, and none is a straight swap for another.
Ecotec 2.4L, 2.0L turbo and 2.5L
The 2.4L LE5, LAF and LEA — including the eAssist mild hybrid — in the LaCrosse, Regal and Verano; the 2.0L turbo LHU in the Regal GS and Regal Turbo and the Verano Turbo, the LTG in later Regals and the Envision, and the LSY in the newest Envision; and the 2.5L LCV in the Envision.
Small turbos — 1.4L, 1.6L, 1.2L and 1.3L
The 1.4L turbo LUV and LE2 in the 2013–2022 Encore, the 1.6L turbo LWC in the Cascada, and the 1.2L LIH and 1.3L L3T three-cylinders in the Encore GX and Envista.
2.5L turbo
The LK0 four-cylinder that replaced the V6 in the Enclave from 2025 — Buick’s newest engine, and the only one offered in the third-generation Enclave.

FAQ
Used Buick engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Buick has?
The eighth character of the VIN is the engine code, and the engine’s RPO code is printed on the Service Parts Identification label — in the glove box on older models, or in a QR code on the driver’s door pillar on recent ones. Send us the VIN and we will confirm it for you.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Chevrolet or GMC engine fit my Buick?
Often, because they are the same GM families — GM’s own coverage documents list the Enclave’s 3.6L alongside the Traverse’s and the Acadia’s. But the engine has to carry the same RPO code and suit the same model year: an LLT from a Traverse fits an Enclave built with an LLT, not one built with an LY7 or an LFY. Send us the VIN and we will match it.
Does a used Buick engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
