Nissan Transmissions

Finding the right Nissan transmission

Most Nissan cars and crossovers built since the late 2000s use the Xtronic CVT, while the trucks and larger SUVs use conventional five-, seven- and nine-speed automatics.

The CVT has been through several generations, and within each one Nissan builds versions for different engines and models. Matching by model, engine and model year is essential — give us your VIN and we’ll do it for you.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Nissan vehicles

Xtronic CVT — first generation

The Murano (2003–2014), Altima (2007–2012), Maxima (2007–2015), Sentra (2007–2012), Rogue (2008–2013) and Quest (2011–2014).

Xtronic CVT7 — small cars

The Versa (2012–2019), Versa Note, the 1.8L Sentra (2013–2019) and the Juke.

Xtronic CVT8

The Altima from 2013, Pathfinder (2013–2020), Rogue (2014–2020), Murano (2015–2023), Maxima (2016–2023) and Rogue Sport.

Five-speed automatic — trucks and SUVs

The RE5R05A in the 350Z, the Titan and Armada to 2015, the Frontier (2005–2019), the Xterra and the 2005–2012 Pathfinder.

Seven- and nine-speed automatics

The seven-speed in the 370Z and the 2017-on Titan and Armada, and the nine-speed in the Frontier and Titan from 2020 and in the Nissan Z.

Older front-wheel-drive automatics

The four-speed RE4F04B in the 2002–2006 Altima, and the five-speed RE5F22A in the Maxima, Quest and V6 Altima of the mid-2000s.

FAQ

Used Nissan transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Nissan has?

It depends on the model, engine and model year, and Nissan builds each transmission in several versions. Send us your VIN and we will identify the exact unit.

Are all Nissan CVTs the same?

No. There are several generations, with separate units for four-cylinder and V6 engines and for small cars, and they do not interchange.

Does a replacement Nissan CVT need programming?

On most 2013-on models, yes. The control module has to be programmed with the new unit’s calibration data, using Nissan’s scan tool. Check that your installer can do it.

Does a used Nissan transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
