Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Maxima have?

The 1982–1984 Maxima is rear-wheel drive, with a five-speed manual or an automatic: a three-speed at first, then a four-speed with overdrive. Every Maxima from 1985 is front-wheel drive, with a four-speed automatic to 2003, the RE5F22A five-speed automatic offered in 2004–2006 and a CVT on every car from 2007. Manuals lasted until 2006 — a five-speed through 2001 and a six-speed from 2002.

Each generation had its own version of the four-speed automatic, and the CVT years split between the first-generation Xtronic (2007–2014) and the CVT8 (2016–2023), so the table below goes by generation and we confirm the exact unit from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Three- or four-speed automatic — 1982–1984

Both rear-wheel-drive automatics were fitted to these cars, and one does not replace the other. Tell us which yours has, or send the VIN and we will work it out.

Which front-wheel-drive automatic

A four-speed for 1985–2003, in a different version for each generation, the RE5F22A five-speed offered in 2004–2006, a first-generation Xtronic CVT for 2007–2014 and a CVT8 for 2016–2023. None of these interchange.

Manuals

A five-speed was offered from 1982 to 2001 and a six-speed from 2002 to 2006, on the SE only in 2004–2006. No Maxima after 2006 had a manual.

Programming — 2016–2023

A replacement CVT8 will not work properly until the transmission control module is loaded with that unit’s calibration data through Nissan’s scan tool. Check that your installer can do this before you order.

CVTs from other Nissans

The Murano and Altima used both of the Maxima’s CVT families, and the Pathfinder the CVT8, but each model has its own version. A unit from another model is not a straight swap for the Maxima’s.

Have your VIN ready

From the VIN we can tell the model year, engine and drivetrain, and so the transmission your Maxima left the factory with, before we quote.

Common Problems

Common Maxima transmission problems

Whine, shudder and slipping — first-generation CVT, 2007–2014

The JF010E-family CVT can whine, shudder, hesitate and slip, and some overheat and drop into a reduced-power mode. Check the fluid and fault codes before deciding the unit has failed.

Shudder and hesitation — CVT8, 2016–2023

Shudder, hesitation and jerky or lost drive, most noticeable when pulling away and at low speed. A scan for fault codes and a fluid check come first; a unit that keeps doing it after that usually needs replacing.

FAQ

Maxima transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Maxima have?

A 1982–1984 car has a five-speed manual or a three- or four-speed automatic. From 1985 to 2003 it is a four-speed automatic or a five- or six-speed manual; for 2004–2006 an automatic, including the RE5F22A five-speed, or a six-speed manual on the SE; and from 2007 a CVT on every car, the first-generation Xtronic to 2014 and the CVT8 for 2016–2023. Your VIN pins down which one.

Will a CVT from a Murano or Altima fit my Maxima?

Not as a straight swap. Those models share the Maxima’s CVT families, but each one has its own version of the unit. Send us your VIN and we will match a Maxima transmission from the right generation.

Does a replacement CVT8 need programming on a 2016–2023 Maxima?

Yes. The new unit’s calibration data has to be loaded into the transmission control module with Nissan’s scan tool, so make sure your installer has one before the car goes in.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
