Finding the right Ford engine
Ford uses the same engine families across its trucks, SUVs and cars — the 5.4L V8 in the F-150 also powered the Expedition and the E-Series vans — which helps when you need a replacement.
The catch is that one name often covers several different engines. The 4.6L and 5.4L V8s came in 2-valve and 3-valve versions, and the EcoBoost engines were redesigned without a change of name. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Ford vehicles
Modular V8 — 4.6L, 5.4L and 5.0L
The 4.6L and 5.4L Triton V8s powered the F-150 from 1997 to 2010, along with the Expedition, E-Series, Crown Victoria and Mustang GT. The 5.0L “Coyote” replaced them in the F-150 and Mustang GT from 2011.
EcoBoost — turbocharged, direct injection
From small four-cylinders to the 3.5L V6: the 1.5L and 2.0L in the Escape and Fusion, the 2.3L in the Explorer, Mustang and Ranger, and the 2.7L and 3.5L V6s in the F-150 and Expedition.
Cyclone V6 — 3.3L, 3.5L and 3.7L
Non-turbo V6s used from 2007 in the Edge, Taurus, Flex, Explorer and Mustang, and as the base engine in the F-150 from 2011.
Duratec four-cylinders and V6s
The 2.0L, 2.3L and 2.5L four-cylinders in the Focus, Fusion and Escape, and the 2.5L and 3.0L V6s in the Taurus, Escape and Fusion of the 2000s.
Power Stroke diesels
The 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L V8s in Super Duty trucks, and the 3.0L V6 sold in the F-150 from 2018 to 2021.
6.2L and 7.3L gasoline V8s
The 6.2L in the F-150 Raptor (2010–2014) and Super Duty (2011–2022), and the 7.3L pushrod V8 in the Super Duty from 2020.

How do I find out which engine my Ford has?
The eighth character of your VIN identifies the engine. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version — including 2-valve or 3-valve on the Triton V8s.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Do you supply engines for Super Duty trucks?
Yes — the gasoline V8s and the Power Stroke diesels for the F-250, F-350 and larger trucks. Choose your model in the quote form, or call us.
