Engine Options
Which engine does your Edge have?
Two generations of Edge used two different engine line-ups: the first (2007–2014) was built around the 3.5L Duratec V6, with a 3.7L for the Sport and a 2.0L EcoBoost late in the run; the second (2015–2024) made the 2.0L EcoBoost standard, kept the 3.5L to 2018 and gave the Sport and ST a 2.7L twin-turbo V6. Production ended in April 2024.
The table below lists what was offered when. The 2.0L EcoBoost was a different engine in each generation and its block was revised again for 2020, so we confirm the exact one from your VIN.
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 3.5L Duratec V6 | All years. Revised with Ti-VCT for 2011. The water pump is inside the engine, driven by the timing chain. |
| 3.7L Duratec V6 | Sport, 2011–2014. |
| 2.0L EcoBoost I4 (first generation) | The last years of the first generation, to 2014. |
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 2.0L EcoBoost I4 (second generation) | Twin-scroll turbo, all years. Small output increase with the 2019 refresh; block revised for 2020. |
| 3.5L Duratec V6 | 2015–2018. |
| 2.7L EcoBoost V6 | Twin-turbo. Sport 2015–2018; ST 2019–2024, rated higher. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 2.0L EcoBoost
The first-generation 2.0L fitted to late first-generation cars (through 2014) and the twin-scroll second generation from 2015 are different engines, and the second generation’s block was changed for 2020. The model year decides which one you need.
Which 3.5L
The 3.5L was revised with Ti-VCT for 2011 and carried into the second generation through 2018. We match it by model year rather than treating every 3.5L as the same.
Sport and ST
The Sport had the 3.7L in 2011–2014 and the 2.7L EcoBoost in 2015–2018; the ST (2019–2024) has a higher-rated 2.7L. Tell us your trim.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and trim before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Edge engine problems
Internal water pump — 3.5L and 3.7L V6, 2007–2018
The chain-driven pump sits inside the engine and fails without warning, dumping coolant into the crankcase and damaging bearings and head gaskets. The engine has to come out to replace the pump, and often the whole engine is replaced. A class action was filed and dismissed; there is no recall.
Coolant intrusion — 2.0L EcoBoost, 2015–2019
Coolant leaks into the cylinders, causing misfires, white exhaust smoke, unexplained coolant loss and eventually overheating or hydrolock; some owners report needing a new long block. Ford changed the block for 2020 with drilled rather than slotted coolant passages. There is no recall or program for it.
Intake valves — 2.7L EcoBoost, 2021–2022 ST
Recall 24V635 covers these engines because the intake valves can fracture and cause engine failure. Dealers run an engine cycle test and replace the engine if it fails, so check whether that was done. A separate 2024 bulletin cautions on the oil-pump drive belt on 2015–2023 2.7L engines.
Fuel tank leaks — 2007–2014
Not the engine, but worth checking by VIN: recalls 08V301 and 14V682 cover first-generation cars for fuel-tank leaks. There is no engine recall on these cars for the water pump.

FAQ
Edge engine questions, answered
Which engine does my Edge have?
A 2007–2014 Edge has the 3.5L V6 unless it is a Sport (3.7L) or a late 2.0L EcoBoost car. A 2015-on Edge has the 2.0L EcoBoost unless it is a 2015–2018 with the 3.5L, a 2015–2018 Sport or a 2019–2024 ST (2.7L). Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Is it worth replacing the engine after a water pump failure?
It depends on how far the coolant went. The pump is inside the engine, so the engine has to come out either way; if the bearings or head gaskets have been damaged, a replacement engine is the usual route. Tell us what the shop found.
Was the 2021–2022 ST recall repaired with a new engine?
Not always. Under recall 24V635 the dealer runs an engine cycle test and replaces the engine only if it fails. Ask for the service record; a car that passed the test keeps its original engine.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
