Engine Options

Which engine does your Focus have?

Three generations of Focus were sold in the US and the engines changed with each: the 2.0L SPI and Zetec four-cylinders of the early cars, the Mazda-derived 2.0L and 2.3L Duratec from 2005, and from 2012 the direct-injection 2.0L, the 1.0L three-cylinder EcoBoost and the turbocharged engines of the ST and RS. The Focus Electric of 2012–2018 had no engine at all.

The table below lists what was offered when. Several different engines were sold as a “2.0L” over the years and none of them interchanges with the others, so we confirm which one you have from the VIN.

2000–2004First generation
2.0L SPI I4Standard on LX and SE sedans and the 2000 wagon. An 8-valve single-cam engine, not interchangeable with the Zetec.
2.0L Zetec I416-valve twin-cam. ZX3, ZX5, ZTS and wagons after 2000; optional on the SE sedan.
2.0L Zetec SVT I4SVT Focus, 2002–2004, with a Cosworth cylinder head.
2.3L Duratec I4Option: in California and some north-eastern states for 2003, all states for 2004.
2005–2007First generation, 2005 facelift
2.0L Duratec I4All non-ST models. A PZEV version was required in California and several north-eastern states.
2.3L Duratec I4Focus ST, 2005–2007.
2008–2011Second generation
2.0L Duratec I4The only engine. The 2.3L was dropped; a PZEV version continued in some states.
2012–2018Third generation
2.0L Duratec GDI I4Standard engine on every model except the ST and RS. Flex-fuel from mid-2012 outside the PZEV states.
1.0L EcoBoost I3SE option from the 2015 refresh to 2018.
2.0L EcoBoost I4Focus ST, 2013–2018. Manual only.
2.3L EcoBoost I4Focus RS, 2016–2018. All-wheel drive, manual only.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 2.0L

The Focus had an SPI, a Zetec, a Duratec, a direct-injection Duratec and the ST’s turbocharged EcoBoost, all of 2.0L and none interchangeable. We match the engine family and model year, not the size.

SPI or Zetec on a 2000–2004

The two base engines of the early car are unrelated: the SPI is an 8-valve single-cam engine and the Zetec a 16-valve twin-cam. Both were sold in the same sedan, so the VIN decides.

PZEV versions

Cars sold in California and several north-eastern states had a PZEV version of the 2.0L and 2.3L Duratec, and later of the 2.0L GDI. Tell us where the car was sold or send the VIN.

ST and RS engines

The ST’s 2.0L EcoBoost and the RS’s 2.3L EcoBoost are turbocharged engines sold only with a manual gearbox. Neither interchanges with the 2.0L GDI of the ordinary Focus.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and emissions version before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Focus engine problems

Dropped valve seats — 2.0L SPI, 2000–2004

A valve seat drops out of the cylinder head, usually on the fourth cylinder, and wrecks the piston and head. It is widely reported at around 100,000–120,000 miles and sometimes earlier, and Ford issued no bulletin or recall for it, so a replacement engine is the usual outcome.

Oil-pump belt failure — 1.0L EcoBoost, 2016–2018

The belt that drives the oil pump can fail, the engine loses oil pressure and stalls, and the damage can be total. Ford recalled these cars in December 2023 (recall 23V905): the belt and tensioner are replaced, or the engine itself if it is already damaged. Check by VIN before paying for an engine; NHTSA opened a further investigation into 2015–2018 cars in December 2025.

Stalling from a stuck purge valve — 2.0L GDI, 2012–2018

The canister purge valve sticks, excess vacuum deforms the fuel tank and the engine stalls and will not restart. It looks like an engine failure but is not one: recall 18V735 and its follow-ups cover a PCM update and, where needed, a new valve and tank.

Coolant loss — 2.3L EcoBoost RS, 2016–2017 builds

Head-gasket failure with coolant consumption on early RS engines is widely reported, as is a Ford customer-satisfaction program for it. Ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN for any open program before paying for an engine.

FAQ

Focus engine questions, answered

Which engine does my 2000–2004 Focus have, SPI or Zetec?

LX and SE sedans normally had the 2.0L SPI; the ZX3, ZX5, ZTS, wagons and SE sedans with the option had the 2.0L Zetec. Send us the VIN and we will confirm which.

My Focus stalls. Is the engine failing?

Check the recalls first. 2012–2018 2.0L cars were recalled for a purge valve that stalls the engine (recall 18V735) and earlier for wiring splices and fuel-pump faults that do the same, and 2000–2004 cars had a ten-year campaign for a clogging fuel delivery module (recall 03V482). None of these is an engine fault.

Do you supply engines for the Focus Electric?

No. The 2012–2018 Focus Electric has a motor and battery instead of an engine. If a 2012–2013 car loses power as though it had stalled, that is the PCM software recall 13V523, which a dealer reprograms.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
