Engine Options
Which engine does your Mustang have?
The Mustang’s engines have changed with every generation, and the names can mislead. “5.0” has meant two different V8s — the pushrod 302 of 1982–1995 and the “Coyote” from 2011, which itself has four versions — and the 4.6L V8 of 1996–2010 came in 2-, 3- and 4-valve forms with different heads and electronics.
The table below lists what was offered when. On 1981 and later cars the eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine; 1980 cars have an older, shorter VIN that also carries an engine code. We match the version to the model year.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which 5.0L
A 1982–1995 5.0L is the pushrod 302. From 2011 it is the Coyote, in four generations: 2011–2014, 2015–2017, 2018–2023 and 2024 on. Match the model year, not just the “5.0” badge.
Fox body 5.0L induction
The 1982–1993 5.0L was carbureted, throttle-body injected or port injected, with speed-density or mass airflow electronics, depending on the year and transmission. We match the intake and electronics to your car, not just the block.
2-, 3- or 4-valve 4.6L
GTs had a 2-valve 4.6L from 1996 to 2004 and a 3-valve from 2005 to 2010, while the Cobra and Mach 1 used 4-valve engines. They have different heads and electronics.
2004 V6: 3.8L or 3.9L
The V6 changed from 3.8L to 3.9L during the 2004 model year. The VIN and build date tell us which one your car has.
Shelby and Dark Horse engines
The Shelby GT350 and GT500 engines do not swap for a GT’s 5.0L, and the Dark Horse’s 5.0L has its own internal parts and calibration. Tell us the exact model, not just the year.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and trim before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Mustang engine problems
Head gaskets — 1994–2004 3.8L V6
The 3.8L V6 is known for head gasket failure, which shows up as coolant loss, overheating or coolant in the oil. Driving on after it overheats can warp the heads and damage the bearings.
Broken spark plugs — 2005–2008 4.6L 3-valve
The original two-piece spark plugs can seize in the aluminum heads and break off when they are removed, leaving part of the plug behind in the cylinder head.

FAQ
Mustang engine questions, answered
My 5.0L ticks at idle. Does it need replacing?
On a 2011-or-later Coyote, not on that alone. A light tick at idle is a familiar trait of the engine. A knock, low oil pressure or a misfire is a different matter; have it diagnosed before you order.
Will a Coyote from an F-150 fit my Mustang?
Not as it comes out of the truck. The F-150’s Coyote has its own intake, oil pan, accessory drive and calibration, so we match the engine to the vehicle it is going into. Send us your VIN.
Can I put a GT engine in a V6 or EcoBoost Mustang?
Not as a straightforward replacement. The wiring, transmission, exhaust and electronics all differ. We recommend replacing like with like.
Is a Bullitt or Mach 1 engine the same as a GT’s?
Both use the 5.0L Coyote, but the 2019–2020 Bullitt and the 2021–2023 Mach 1 add parts from the Shelby GT350, including its intake manifold, and have their own calibration. We match the engine and its parts to the exact model.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
