Engine Options
Which engine does your Ranger have?
There are two different Rangers: the compact truck sold from 1983 to 2011, and the larger truck that returned for 2019 after a seven-year gap. No engine interchanges between the two.
The compact truck went through three generations and a long run of engines — four-cylinders from 2.0L to 2.5L, V6s from 2.8L to 4.0L and, in its early years, two diesels — while the newer truck has had the 2.3L EcoBoost from the start. The table below lists what was offered when; the eighth character of the VIN confirms the engine.
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| 2.0L Lima four-cylinder | Carbureted, 1983–1988. |
| 2.3L Lima four-cylinder | Twin-plug cylinder head from 1989. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Four V6s in the first generation
The 2.8L gave way to the 2.9L for 1986, the pushrod 4.0L arrived for 1990 and the 3.0L for 1991, so a 1991–1992 truck can have the 2.9L, the 3.0L or the 4.0L. The VIN tells us which.
Pushrod or overhead-cam 4.0L
The 4.0L V6 was a pushrod engine until 2000 and an overhead-cam design from 2001. The two are not direct replacements for each other, so the engine has to match your truck’s year.
Two four-cylinders in 2001
The 2.5L ran until early in the 2001 model year and the 2.3L Duratec took over partway through it, so a 2001 truck can have either. The VIN tells us which.
Old truck, new truck
An engine from a 1983–2011 truck will not go into a 2019-on Ranger, and a 2019-on engine will not go into an older truck. On the 2024-on truck, the 3.0L V6 is used only in the Raptor.
Have your VIN ready
The eighth character of the VIN is the engine code. Send us the full VIN and we will check the engine and model year before quoting.
Common Problems
Common Ranger engine problems
Cracked cylinder heads — 1986–1992 2.9L V6
The 2.9L V6 is known for cylinder heads that crack, which shows up as coolant loss and overheating. An engine that has run hot on a cracked head often needs more than a new head.
Timing chain guides — 2001–2011 4.0L
The plastic timing-chain guides and tensioners on the overhead-cam V6 wear or break, giving a rattle that is worst at start-up. The rear chain can only be reached with the engine out, so the engine has to come out to repair it.

FAQ
Ranger engine questions, answered
Will an engine from the old Ranger fit the new one?
No. The 1983–2011 compact truck and the 2019-on truck share no engines. On the older truck, the replacement has to be the same engine as the original, and some changed from year to year, so send us your VIN.
Can I use a 4.0L from an Explorer?
Both 4.0L V6s, the pushrod and the overhead-cam, were also used in the Explorer, and the Mazda B-Series pickup sold from 1994 was a Ranger with a different badge. The version and years still have to match, so send us your VIN.
Did the Ranger come with a diesel in the US?
Only in its first years: a 2.2L diesel in 1983 and 1984, then a Mitsubishi-built 2.3L turbodiesel from 1985. Neither stayed long, and no US Ranger since the 1980s has had a diesel.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
