Dodge Engines
Finding the right Dodge engine
Dodge and Ram share their engines with the rest of Chrysler, so the Hemi in a Ram 1500 is also found in the Charger, Challenger, Durango and Grand Cherokee, and the Pentastar V6 is in almost everything. That widens the pool of good used engines.
The same name can still mean a different engine: the 5.7L Hemi was revised in 2009, the 4.7L in 2008 and the Pentastar in 2016, and each vehicle has its own version. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Dodge vehicles
Hemi V8 — 5.7L, 6.1L, 6.4L and the supercharged 6.2L
The 5.7L in the Ram 1500 (2003–2024, back for 2026), Charger, Challenger, Durango and Grand Cherokee; the 6.4L in the SRT and Scat Pack cars and heavy-duty Rams; the supercharged 6.2L Hellcat in the Charger, Challenger, Durango and Ram TRX.
Pentastar 3.6L V6
The mainstay since 2011: Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan and Pacifica, and the Ram 1500 from 2013.
PowerTech 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8
The Ram 1500 (2002–2013), Dakota and Durango of the 2000s, shared with the Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee.
Magnum pushrod V6 and V8s
The 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L in Rams, Dakotas and Durangos to 2003.
Four-cylinders
The 2.0L and 2.4L World Gas Engine in the Caliber, Avenger, Journey and Dart, and the 2.4L Tigershark that followed.
Diesels and the Hurricane six
The Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L in heavy-duty Rams, the 3.0L EcoDiesel in the Ram 1500 (2014–2023), and the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo six in the Ram 1500 and Charger from 2025.

FAQ
Used Dodge engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Dodge or Ram has?
The eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version, including the mid-life revisions that matter for fit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Do you supply Cummins diesels for heavy-duty Rams?
Yes — the 5.9L and 6.7L for the Ram 2500 and 3500. Choose your model in the quote form, or call us.
Does a used Dodge or Ram engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
