Engine Options
Which engine does your Journey have?
The Journey ran for twelve years on one platform with three engines: the 2.4L World four-cylinder for the whole run, the 3.5L SOHC V6 for the first two years, and the 3.6L Pentastar V6 from 2011 until it was dropped for 2020, which left the four-cylinder as the only engine in the final year.
The table below lists what was offered when. The 3.5L and 3.6L are unrelated engines despite the similar size, so we confirm which one from the VIN.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L World four-cylinder | DOHC 16-valve with dual variable valve timing. | |
| 3.5L SOHC V6 | Code: EGF | V6 models; timing belt. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L World four-cylinder | Four-cylinder models. | |
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 | V6 models. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L World four-cylinder | The only engine in the final year. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Which V6
The 3.5L of 2009–2010 and the 3.6L of 2011–2019 are unrelated designs: the 3.5L is a belt-driven single-overhead-cam engine, the 3.6L a Pentastar. The model year decides which you need.
The four-cylinder, every year
The 2.4L was fitted from 2009 to 2020 and always with the 40TES four-speed. Tell us the year so the right version is quoted.
Check recalls first
The 2.4L engine cover (15V431), the 2016 crankshaft and camshaft sensors (16V907) and the 2018 powertrain control module (18V524) were all recalled for stalling or fire risks that look like engine faults. Have them checked by VIN before ordering.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Journey engine problems
Timing belt failure — 3.5L, 2009–2010
The 3.5L’s timing belt also drives the water pump, and the engine is an interference design: a belt that snaps or a water pump that seizes puts pistons into valves. A neglected belt is the usual reason a 3.5L Journey needs a replacement engine. There is no recall.
Cylinder head wear — 2011–2013 3.6L
Valve guide and seat wear in the left cylinder head causes misfires. Chrysler extended the warranty on that head to 10 years or 150,000 miles on 2011–2012 and some 2013 models; the cover has now expired. Separately, 2012 cars built from 31 August to 13 September 2011 were recalled (11V487) for connecting-rod bearing debris that can seize the engine, and owners report oil leaks from the oil-filter housing.
Engine cover fire risk — 2.4L, 2011–2015
The engine cover can come loose and land on the exhaust manifold, where it can catch fire. Recall 15V431 covers 2011–2015 four-cylinder cars.
Stalling that is not the engine — 2009–2018
An ignition switch that can slip to off (14V373, 2009–2010), crankshaft and camshaft sensors (16V907, 2016 cars built May–July) and a powertrain control module voltage regulator (18V524, 2018) were all recalled for stalling. Owners of 2009 cars also report the engine dying while driving. Have the recalls checked before concluding the engine has failed.

FAQ
Journey engine questions, answered
Which engine does my Journey have?
A four-cylinder Journey has the 2.4L in every year. A 2009–2010 V6 is the 3.5L; a 2011–2019 V6 is the 3.6L Pentastar. No 2020 Journey has a V6. The VIN confirms it.
Will a 3.6L from a Grand Caravan or Charger fit my Journey?
The Pentastar was used across the Chrysler range, but each application has its own version. Match the model year and send us your VIN so we can confirm.
The timing belt on my 3.5L snapped. Do I need a new engine?
Often, yes. The 3.5L is an interference engine, so a broken belt lets pistons meet valves, and the damage is usually extensive enough that a replacement engine is the practical route. Have a new belt and water pump fitted to the replacement before it goes in.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
