Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Journey have?
The Journey only ever had two transmissions, and the engine decides which: the 40TES four-speed automatic behind the 2.4L four-cylinder for the whole 2009–2020 run — Chrysler’s last four-speed application — and the 62TE six-speed behind the 3.5L and 3.6L V6s.
The table below shows what was fitted when. The 62TE was used in several Chrysler vehicles and differs by year and platform, so we confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 40TES four-speed automatic | 2.4L. |
| 62TE six-speed automatic | 3.5L V6. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 40TES four-speed automatic | 2.4L. |
| 62TE six-speed automatic | 3.6L V6. |
| Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|
| 40TES four-speed automatic | 2.4L, the only engine in the final year. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Match the engine
A four-cylinder Journey has the 40TES and a V6 has the 62TE; the two do not interchange. Tell us the engine with the year.
Which 62TE
The 62TE was fitted to the Grand Caravan, the ProMaster and other Chrysler vehicles as well as the Journey, and bell housings and bolt patterns differ by year and platform. A unit has to match your Journey’s year and engine.
Check the 2016 recall first
A 2016 Journey built between 17 August 2015 and 29 January 2016 may be covered by the 62TE pump recall (16V461), and the fix can be a new transmission. Have a dealer check the VIN before ordering.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Journey transmission problems
62TE pump seizure recall — 2016
Cars built between 17 August 2015 and 29 January 2016 were recalled (16V461) because the transmission pump can seize, taking away hydraulic pressure and drive. The remedy can be a new transmission.
62TE failure and erratic shifting — 2009–2012
Owners of 2009 cars report outright failure, erratic shifting and jerking, and 2012 complaints describe metal shavings inside the case and complete failure at around 124,000 miles.
40TES — 2.4L, 2009–2020
There is no recall on the four-speed behind the 2.4L and no documented pattern of failure. It was Chrysler’s last four-speed application and stayed in production to 2020.

FAQ
Journey transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Journey have?
Four-cylinder cars have the 40TES four-speed and V6 cars the 62TE six-speed, in every year. Send us the VIN and we will confirm the version.
Will a Grand Caravan 62TE fit my Journey?
Both use the 62TE, but bell housings and bolt patterns differ by year and platform, so a van unit is not a direct swap. Send us your VIN so we quote the Journey version for your year and engine.
My 2016 Journey lost drive. Is this the recall?
Possibly. Cars built between 17 August 2015 and 29 January 2016 were recalled (16V461) for a transmission pump that can seize. A dealer can check the VIN; if the recall applies, the repair, which can mean a new transmission, is done under the recall.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
