Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Ram 2500 have?
The Ram 2500’s transmissions split by engine. Behind the Cummins came the heavy-duty 47RH, 47RE and 48RE four-speeds, the 68RFE six-speed from mid-2007 and a ZF eight-speed from 2025, with the NV4500, NV5600 and G56 manuals alongside until 2018. The gasoline trucks used the 46RE, 545RFE and 66RFE and, since 2019, the 8HP75 eight-speed.
The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the diesel’s transmission changed mid-year in 2007 and the same year can have three different units, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Gasoline or diesel
The Cummins and the gasoline engines use different automatics, sized for the diesel’s torque. Match the unit to the engine, not just the model year.
Which diesel automatic
The 47RE, 48RE, 68RFE and the 2025 ZF eight-speed followed each other, and a 2007 truck has either the 48RE or the 68RFE depending on build date. The Aisin units went behind the 3500 High Output and chassis cabs, not the 2500 pickup.
Two- or four-wheel drive
Four-wheel-drive units differ from two-wheel-drive ones. Tell us which your truck has.
Programming after fitting
The 68RFE and the eight-speeds are controlled by software that has to be matched to the truck, and many shift complaints are fixed by an update alone.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Ram 2500 transmission problems
68RFE recalls — 2019–2023
Fluid can be forced out of the dipstick tube onto hot parts and catch fire; recall 20V043 covered 2019–2020 trucks and 22V835 extended it to 2020–2023. On 2023 trucks a weld leak can cause loss of drive or of Park (24V413). When a 68RFE fails it drops to limp mode in fourth gear; have the recalls checked by VIN before condemning the unit. Trucks from 2010 to 2018 were also recalled for a shift-interlock pin that can let the lever leave Park without the brake (17V821 and 18V100).
Overdrive lubrication — 47RH, 47RE and 48RE
Early units in this family had overdrive-unit lubrication problems, which factory and aftermarket valve-body changes addressed. Diesel trucks were also recalled for a column shifter that could fail to engage Park (05V462).
Solenoid pack failure — 545RFE and 66RFE
Failure of the solenoid and pressure-switch pack drops the transmission into limp mode, stuck in third. Valve-body wear brings harsh or lazy shifts, and a sticking thermal bypass valve can overheat the unit.
NV4500 fifth gear — 1994–2005
The NV4500 needs the synthetic lubricant specified for it, and owners widely report the fifth-gear nut on the mainshaft backing off, which loses fifth gear. Ask about both on any NV4500 truck.

FAQ
Ram 2500 transmission questions, answered
Which transmission is behind my Cummins?
The 47RH or 47RE four-speed automatic to 2002, the 48RE for 2003–2007, the 68RFE six-speed from the 2007.5 trucks to 2024 and a ZF eight-speed from 2025. The manuals were the NV4500 to 2005, the NV5600 from 1999 to 2005 and the G56 from mid-2005 to 2018. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Can I get a manual for my Ram 2500?
For trucks up to 2018, yes: the NV3500 and NV4500 five-speeds, the NV5600 six-speed and the G56 six-speed. No Ram 2500 has had a manual since 2018.
Will a transmission from a Ram 3500 fit?
Often, since the 2500 and 3500 share the 68RFE and the gasoline units, but the 3500 High Output used the Aisin AS69RC, which the 2500 pickup never had. The unit has to match your engine, drivetrain and model year, so send us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
