Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Caravan and Grand Caravan have?

A five-speed manual was offered on some four-cylinder Caravans to 1990 and again for 1992–1994, but most of these vans are automatics, all of them Chrysler’s own transverse units. Three-speed TorqueFlites (the A413, A470 and A670, with the A413 later known as the 31TH) served the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6 to 2000 and the four-cylinders until early in the 2001–2007 generation, when the 2.4L moved to a four-speed. The A604 Ultradrive four-speed arrived for 1989 and was renamed the 41TE. It stayed behind the 3.8L until 2007 and the 3.3L until 2010, with the 41AE version in all-wheel-drive vans from 1991 to 2004. The 62TE six-speed arrived in 2008.

The table below shows what was fitted when. In most years the engine decides the transmission, and the 41TE and 62TE were revised over their long runs, so we confirm the exact unit from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

Each three-speed was built for particular engines: the A413 and later 31TH for Chrysler’s four-cylinders, the A470 for the Mitsubishi 2.6L and the A670 for the Mitsubishi 3.0L. In 1989–1990 the 3.0L could also have the A604 four-speed, and in 2008–2010 the 3.3L kept the four-speed while the 3.8L and 4.0L had the six-speed. Tell us the engine as well as the year.

Manual or automatic

Some four-cylinder Caravans from 1984–1990 and 1992–1994 have a five-speed manual. If your van has a clutch pedal, say so, so that we quote a manual and not an automatic.

Which 62TE

The Grand Caravan used the 62TE from 2008 to 2020 behind three different V6s, and other Chrysler vehicles used it too. Units were built to suit each engine and vehicle, so match the model year and engine rather than the transmission name alone.

All-wheel drive, 1991–2004

All-wheel-drive vans, offered from 1991 to 2004, use the 41AE, not the 41TE. All-wheel drive ended when Stow ’n Go seating arrived for 2005.

Chrysler fluid only

The four- and six-speed automatics need Chrysler’s own fluid, which today is ATF+4. The A604 was designed for Chrysler’s fluid, yet early owner’s manuals allowed Dexron when it was not to hand, and running it on Dexron led to failures. Fill a replacement with ATF+4 and nothing else.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Caravan and Grand Caravan transmission problems

A604/41TE clutch failure and limp mode — 1989–2010

The A604 Ultradrive, later the 41TE, earned a reputation for failure soon after it arrived for 1989, with rough shifts and burned clutches, and Chrysler made a long series of design changes to cure clutch failure. Running it on Dexron instead of Chrysler’s fluid made matters worse. When it detects a fault it drops into limp mode, locked in second gear. A failed sensor or solenoid pack can cause that too, so have the fault codes read before condemning the transmission.

62TE pump seizure recall — 2015–2016

On 2015–2016 Grand Caravans made from July 31, 2015, to April 18, 2016, the 62TE’s pump can seize, so the transmission loses hydraulic pressure and the van loses drive. The recall remedy is a new pump, fitted free by a dealer, so have the VIN checked before buying a transmission.

62TE harsh shifts — 2008–2020

The 62TE is known for harsh, banging or delayed shifts. These complaints are often helped by a software update or by the quick-learn procedure a dealer or transmission shop runs with a scan tool, so try those before replacing the unit.

FAQ

Caravan and Grand Caravan transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my van have?

Up to 2000, a four-cylinder van has a three-speed automatic or, on some 1984–1990 and 1992–1994 vans, a five-speed manual; the 3.0L V6 has a three-speed, or the A604 four-speed on some 1989–1990 vans; and the 3.3L and 3.8L have the A604/41TE four-speed, or the 41AE with all-wheel drive. A 2001–2007 2.4L Caravan has a three-speed on the earliest vans and a four-speed after that, while the 3.3L and 3.8L kept the 41TE or 41AE. In 2008–2010 the 3.3L still had the 41TE, and the 3.8L, the 4.0L and every 2011–2020 3.6L have the 62TE six-speed. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is the 41TE the same as the A604?

Yes. The A604 Ultradrive was renamed 41TE when Chrysler moved to its newer transmission names in the 1990s. It was revised many times over its run in these vans, from 1989 to 2010, so a unit still has to match your van’s model year and engine.

Will a 62TE from a Journey fit my Grand Caravan?

Not necessarily. The Journey and the Ram ProMaster use the 62TE too, but each unit was built for a particular engine and vehicle, so it has to match your van’s model year and engine. Send us the VIN and we will match it.

My 2015–2016 van lost drive. Is this the recall?

Have it checked. A 62TE pump that can seize was recalled on 2015–2016 Grand Caravans made from July 31, 2015, to April 18, 2016. A dealer can check the VIN, and if the recall applies and has not been done, the dealer replaces the pump free of charge.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
