Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Durango have?

Every Durango has been an automatic, and the unit has followed the engine: Chrysler’s RE four-speeds behind the Magnums, the 45RFE and 545RFE behind the 4.7L and the Hemi, the 42RLE behind the 3.7L V6, a Mercedes five-speed and then a six-speed on the early third-generation truck, and ZF-designed eight-speeds in three sizes since 2014.

There was no 2010 Durango. The table below shows what was fitted when; because the same year can have two or three different units, we confirm from your VIN.

1998–2003First generation (Dakota-based)
42RE four-speed automatic3.9L V6, 1999.
42RE or 44RE four-speed automatic5.2L V8, 1998–2000; sources differ on which unit was fitted.
46RE four-speed automatic5.9L V8, 1998–2003.
45RFE four-speed automatic4.7L, 2000–2002.
545RFE five-speed automatic4.7L, 2003.
2004–2009Second generation
42RLE four-speed automatic3.7L V6.
545RFE five-speed automatic4.7L and 5.7L Hemi.
Two-Mode Hybrid electric transmission2009 Hybrid only; a CVT-type unit for which parts are scarce.
2011–presentThird generation (no 2010 model year)
W5A580 five-speed automatic3.6L, 2011–2012 and most likely 2013.
545RFE five-speed automatic5.7L, 2011.
65RFE six-speed automatic5.7L from 2012, before the eight-speed.
845RE eight-speed automatic3.6L, 2014–2017.
850RE eight-speed automatic3.6L, from 2018.
8HP70 eight-speed automatic5.7L Hemi, 2014–2024.
Eight-speed automatic6.4L SRT 392, 2018–2024, with its own version.
8HP95 eight-speed automaticSRT Hellcat, 2021 and from 2023.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

In most years the Durango had two or three transmissions at once, one per engine. A unit from behind a 3.6L is not right for a Hemi.

Which eight-speed

The 845RE, 850RE, 8HP70 and 8HP95 are all eight-speeds from the same ZF family, sized for different engines. They are not interchangeable.

Rear-wheel or all-wheel drive

The unit differs between rear-drive and all-wheel-drive Durangos. Tell us which yours is.

Programming after fitting

The eight-speeds are electronically controlled and many shift complaints are cured by a software update. A replacement needs programming to the vehicle.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drivetrain and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Durango transmission problems

Solenoid pack failure — 45RFE and 545RFE, 2000–2011

Failure of the solenoid and pressure-switch pack drops the transmission into limp mode, stuck in third. Valve-body wear brings harsh or lazy shifts, and a sticking thermal bypass valve can overheat the unit.

W5A580 conductor plate — 2011–2013

The conductor plate inside the transmission fails and forces limp mode, and the connector sleeve can leak fluid up the wiring into the control module.

Eight-speed shift quality — 2014 on

Owners of the first eight-speed Durangos report harsh or jerky shifts. Many shift complaints on these units are fixed by a control-module software update alone, so have that done before condemning the transmission.

Shifting out of Park — 2018–2019

A park lock rod on 2018 models could fail to hold Park (recall 18V280), and the ABS module on 2018–2019 models could let the engine start and the lever shift out of Park without the brake pedal pressed (22V426 and 24V838). Have any open recall done before suspecting the transmission.

FAQ

Durango transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Durango have?

It depends on the engine and year: Chrysler four- and five-speeds behind the Magnums, the 4.7L and the Hemi to 2011, the Mercedes five-speed behind the 3.6L to 2013, the 65RFE six-speed behind the 5.7L from 2012, and ZF eight-speeds in several sizes from 2014. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2018 Durango rolled away in Park. Is the transmission faulty?

Probably not. 2018 models were recalled for a park lock rod and 2018–2019 models for an ABS module fault that lets the lever leave Park without the brake. Have the recall work done first.

Will a Grand Cherokee transmission fit?

The Grand Cherokee shares most of these units, but the version still has to match your engine and model year. The 2009 Hybrid’s electric transmission is specific to that model. Send us your VIN.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
