Hyundai Transmissions

Finding the right Hyundai transmission

Hyundai makes most of its own transmissions, through what is now Hyundai Transys: Mitsubishi-derived four-speeds and its own five-speeds early on, in-house six- and eight-speed automatics from 2009, dry and wet dual-clutch units, a chain-type CVT it calls the IVT, and hybrid six-speeds with the motor built in. Only the 2009–2012 Genesis used supplier units from Aisin and ZF.

Which one a Hyundai has depends on the model, the engine and the year, and one model year often had two or three — a 2.0T Sonata may have a six- or an eight-speed, and the 1.6T Eco beside it a dual-clutch. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one. If the fault is in the engine rather than the transmission, see our Hyundai engines page: many Theta II and Nu engines are still covered by Hyundai’s recall and settlement warranties.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Hyundai vehicles

Four- and five-speed automatics

The A4CF1 and A4CF2 four-speeds in the Accent, 2001–2010 Elantra and 2005–2009 Tucson 2.0L; the Mitsubishi-derived F4A42 and F4A51 behind the 1999–2008 Sonata four-cylinder, 2001–2006 Santa Fe, Tucson V6 and 2007–2009 Santa Fe 2.7L; and the A5HF1 and A5GF1 five-speeds in the 2006–2010 Sonata and 2003–2009 Santa Fe V6.

Six-speed automatics

Hyundai’s own units from 2009: the A6GF1 in the 2011–2019 Elantra and Tucson 2.0L, the A6MF1 and A6MF2 in the 2011–2019 Sonata, Tucson 2.4L and Santa Fe Sport 2.4L, and the A6LF1 and A6LF2 behind the 2010–2019 Santa Fe V6 and Santa Fe Sport 2.0T. The 2009–2011 Genesis sedan and 2010–2012 Genesis Coupe used Aisin and ZF six-speeds instead.

Hybrid six-speeds

The A6MF2H, a six-speed automatic with the electric motor in place of the torque converter, in the Sonata Hybrid since 2011 and the Santa Fe and Tucson Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid since 2021. The Ioniq, Elantra Hybrid and Kona Hybrid use the D6KF1 six-speed dry dual-clutch instead.

Eight-speed automatics

The rear-drive A8LR1 and A8TR1 in the 2012–2016 Genesis sedan and 2013–2016 Genesis Coupe, and the front-drive A8LF1 and A8LF2 in the 2018–2019 Sonata 2.0T, the Sonata from 2020, the 2019–2023 Santa Fe (other than the 2.5T) and the 2026 Santa Fe 2.5T, the Tucson from 2022 and the Palisade.

Dual-clutch transmissions

The D7GF1 and D7UF1 seven-speed dry dual-clutch behind the 1.6L turbo in the 2015–2019 Sonata Eco, Elantra Eco, Sport and N Line, 2016–2018 Tucson, Veloster and Kona; and the D8LF1 eight-speed wet dual-clutch behind the 2.5L turbo in the Sonata N Line, 2021–2025 Santa Fe and Santa Cruz, and in the Elantra N, Veloster N and Kona N.

IVT and manuals

The IVT, Hyundai’s chain-type CVT, in the Elantra 2.0L from 2020, the Accent, Venue and Kona 2.0L; the M5CF five-speed and M6CF six-speed manuals in the four-cylinder Elantra, Sonata, Tucson and Santa Fe; and the M6VR six-speed in the rear-drive Genesis Coupe.

FAQ

Used Hyundai transmission questions, answered

How do I know which transmission my Hyundai has?

It depends on the model, engine and model year, and one model year often had more than one unit: the 2.0T Sonata moved from a six-speed to an eight-speed during its run, and the 1.6L turbo cars use a dual-clutch where the rest of the range has a conventional automatic. Send us your VIN and we will identify it.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?

A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Hyundai recalled my dual-clutch. Will I still need a replacement?

Usually not. The 2022 recall of the eight-speed wet dual-clutch in the 2021–2022 Santa Fe 2.5T, Sonata N Line, Santa Cruz, Veloster N and Kona N and the 2022 Elantra N (recall 22V746) is fixed with control-unit software, and the dealer replaces the transmission under the recall if the fault has already set a warning light. The seven-speed dry dual-clutch’s hesitation from a stop was only recalled on the 2016 Tucson (16V628); on the other models it was the subject of a 2016 class action and no recall was issued. Have any open recall done first.

Does a used Hyundai transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
