Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Genesis have?

The Genesis sedan was automatic only: Aisin and ZF six-speeds behind the first V6 and V8, then Hyundai’s own A8LR1 eight-speed from 2012. The Genesis Coupe added a six-speed manual, with a five-speed automatic behind the early 2.0L turbo, a ZF six-speed behind the early 3.8L and the Hyundai eight-speed on both engines from 2013. Hyundai made Genesis a separate brand in late 2015, so the 2017-on G80 is not covered here.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the unit follows the engine and the supplier changed mid-run, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine and year

In 2009–2011 the V6 and V8 sedans had six-speeds from different suppliers, and in 2010–2012 the Coupe’s 2.0L turbo and 3.8L had different automatics. From 2012–2013 everything moved to the Hyundai eight-speed.

Sedan or Coupe eight-speed

The sedan and the Coupe both use the A8LR1 from 2012–2013, behind different engines. We match by car, engine and year rather than treating every A8LR1 as the same.

Rear- or all-wheel drive

The 2015–2016 3.8L sedan was sold rear- or all-wheel drive. Tell us which, because the driveline affects which eight-speed we quote.

Programming after fitting

The eight-speed is electronically controlled, and a replacement needs programming to the car.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Genesis transmission problems

Differential bolts — Genesis Coupe manual, 2013–2015

On manual Coupes built between December 2011 and April 2015, misalignment between the rear differential and the crossmember can loosen the differential bolts until the driveshaft disconnects and the car loses drive. Recall 15V756 (December 2015) has dealers check the assembly; have it done before suspecting the transmission.

No automatic failures documented — sedan and Coupe, 2009–2016

No NHTSA recall or documented pattern of failure was found for the Aisin, ZF or Hyundai eight-speed automatics in the sedan or the Coupe.

ABS fire recall is not the driveline — Genesis Coupe, 2011–2015

Recall 23V651 (September 2023) covers 2011–2015 Genesis Coupes for an ABS module that can leak and short, with a fire risk even when parked. It is unrelated to the transmission, but the car should be parked outside until the recall is done.

FAQ

Genesis transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Genesis have?

Sedans: an Aisin six-speed behind the 3.8L and a ZF six-speed behind the 4.6L for 2009–2011, then the Hyundai eight-speed on every engine from 2012. Coupes: a six-speed manual on both engines, a five-speed automatic on the 2010–2012 2.0L turbo, a ZF six-speed on the 2010–2012 3.8L and the Hyundai eight-speed from 2013. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My manual Genesis Coupe suddenly lost drive. Is the transmission at fault?

Possibly not. Recall 15V756 covers 2013–2015 manual Coupes whose rear differential bolts can loosen until the driveshaft disconnects. Have a dealer check the VIN and the differential before replacing the transmission.

Did the Genesis sedan come with a manual?

No. Every Hyundai Genesis sedan was automatic; only the Genesis Coupe offered the six-speed manual, on both engines and in every year.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
