Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Tucson have?

The first Tucson used a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual; the 2010–2015 car moved to Hyundai’s own six-speed automatics; the 2016–2018 1.6L turbo brought a seven-speed dry dual-clutch, dropped again for 2019; and the 2022-on car uses an eight-speed automatic behind the 2.5L and a six-speed hybrid automatic in the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the transmission follows the engine, we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

Two versions of the six-speed automatic, A6GF1 and A6MF1, were used across the 2010–2021 engines, and the 1.6L turbo used a dual-clutch instead. Tell us the engine.

Dual-clutch or automatic

The 2016–2018 1.6L turbo came only with the seven-speed dry dual-clutch, and the 2.0L of the same years only with the six-speed automatic. They do not swap.

Hybrid six-speed

The Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid use their own six-speed hybrid automatic, not the 2.5L’s eight-speed. Tell us which you have.

Programming after fitting

The dual-clutch, the hybrid six-speed and the eight-speed are electronically controlled, and several complaints are fixed by a control-module update. A replacement needs programming to the vehicle.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Tucson transmission problems

Dual-clutch hesitation — 1.6L turbo, 2016–2018

In high ambient temperatures the control module’s clutch logic delays engagement from a stop, and repeated pedal cycling can leave the car unable to accelerate. Recall 16V628 (August 2016) reflashed the module on 2016 Tucsons built between May 2015 and May 2016; owners of 2016–2017 cars still report hesitation. Have the recall done before assuming the transmission has failed.

Hybrid six-speed sensor bulletins — 2022

Hyundai issued service bulletins in 2022 for the valve-body internal harness and the input and output speed sensors on the Hybrid’s six-speed, both of which set check-engine codes. They are bulletins, not recalls, and point to the harness or sensors before the transmission itself.

Idle Stop & Go oil-pump controller — 2023

Recall 23V526 (August 2023) covers 2023 Tucsons for an Idle Stop & Go electric transmission oil-pump controller that can overheat, with a fire risk. It is a recall on the controller, not a transmission failure; have it done by VIN.

FAQ

Tucson transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Tucson have?

A four-speed automatic or five-speed manual to 2009; a six-speed automatic from 2010 to 2021, with a manual on the 2010 2.4L and a seven-speed dual-clutch on the 2016–2018 1.6L turbo; and an eight-speed automatic on the 2.5L or a six-speed hybrid automatic from 2022. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2016 Tucson hesitates from a stop. Is the transmission failing?

Not necessarily. Recall 16V628 covers 2016 Tucsons with the 1.6L turbo for exactly that: a control-module reflash corrects the clutch logic that delays take-off in hot weather. Have a dealer check the VIN before replacing anything.

Is the Tucson Hybrid’s transmission a CVT?

No. The 2022-on Tucson Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid use a six-speed hybrid automatic, and the 2.5L uses an eight-speed automatic.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
