Engine Options

Which engine does your Tucson have?

Four generations of Tucson have used five engine families: the 2.0L Beta II and 2.7L Delta V6 of the 2005–2009 car, the 2.0L and 2.4L Theta II and then the 2.0L Nu GDI in the 2010–2015 car, the 2.0L Nu, 1.6L Gamma turbo and 2.4L Theta II in the 2016–2021 car, and the 2.5L Smartstream, 1.6L turbo Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid since 2022.

The table below shows what was offered when. The 2.0L badge alone covers four different engines across the years, so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 2.0L

The Tucson has had four different 2.0L engines: the iron-block Beta II to 2009, the Theta II MPI on early-2010s base cars, the Nu GDI of 2014–2018 and the Nu MPI Atkinson of 2019–2021. Match the code, not the size.

Which 2.4L

The 2010–2013 2.4L is port-injected; the 2014–2015 and 2019–2021 2.4L is the direct-injected Theta II GDI. They are not the same engine.

Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid

The 2022-on Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid use a 1.6L turbo with a motor and a high-voltage battery, not the 2.5L. Tell us which you have.

Check open recalls first

Several Tucson engines have recall or extended-warranty cover (see below). A dealer check by VIN may get you a replacement engine from Hyundai before you buy one.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine, model year and trim before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Tucson engine problems

Rod-bearing wear — 2.0L Nu GDI, 2014–2021

Premature connecting-rod bearing wear brings a knock and can end in seizure; a failed rod can punch through the block and start a fire. Recall 21V727 (October 2021) covers 2017 Tucsons with an inspection, a replacement engine where needed and the knock-sensor software, and every 2014–2021 Nu GDI Tucson is in the Engine Litigation II settlement, which extended the rod-bearing warranty to 15 years or 150,000 miles where that software was installed.

Theta II warranty extensions — 2.4L, 2010–2015 and 2019

The 2010–2012 2.4L MPI is in the Engine Litigation II settlement (15 years or 150,000 miles on the rod bearings). The 2014–2015 and 2019 2.4L GDI are in the 2019 Theta II settlement, which gives a lifetime short-block warranty to original and later owners provided the knock-sensor update was installed. Check with a dealer before buying an engine.

Rod-bolt bulletin — 2.5L, 2025–2026

Hyundai issued a bulletin in October 2025 for 2.5L Tucsons built between February and August 2025: connecting-rod bolts may have been under-torqued, causing knocking and low oil pressure. The remedy is a replacement engine sub-assembly, so have a dealer check the build date before suspecting anything else.

FAQ

Tucson engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Tucson have?

A 2.0L Beta II or 2.7L V6 to 2009; a 2.0L or 2.4L Theta II, then a 2.0L Nu GDI or 2.4L GDI, in 2010–2015; a 2.0L Nu or 1.6L turbo in 2016–2018 and a 2.0L Nu or 2.4L GDI in 2019–2021; and a 2.5L or 1.6L turbo hybrid from 2022. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Does my 2017 Tucson have an engine recall?

If it has the 2.0L Nu GDI, yes: recall 21V727 (October 2021) covers 2017 Tucsons for rod-bearing wear, with an inspection and a replacement engine where needed. Have a dealer run the VIN before buying an engine.

Will a 2.0L from an Elantra fit my Tucson?

The 2014–2016 Elantra Sport, Coupe and GT used the same 2.0L Nu GDI as the 2014–2021 Tucson, but the version still has to match your model year. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
