Hyundai Engines
Finding the right Hyundai engine
Hyundai builds nearly all of its own engines, and the same family runs across several models: the Theta II four-cylinder went into the Sonata, Santa Fe and Tucson, the Lambda V6 into the Santa Fe, Azera, Genesis and Palisade, and the Nu and Gamma fours into the Elantra, Tucson and the hybrids. A good used engine for one model is often pulled from another.
Before you buy one, find out whether Hyundai still owes you a repair. The direct-injected Theta II fours of 2011–2019 — the 2.4L GDI and the 2.0L turbo — can fail at the connecting-rod bearings because machining debris left in the crankshaft restricts their oil supply. Hyundai recalled the 2011–2012 Sonata (recall 15V568) and the 2013–2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport (17V226) to inspect the engine and replace the short block, then added the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS), a software update that listens for bearing wear and limits power. A 2019 class settlement went further: 2011–2019 Sonatas, 2013–2018 Santa Fe Sports, the 2019 Santa Fe and the 2014–2015 and 2019 Tucson have a lifetime short-block warranty for the original and later owners, provided the KSDS update is installed and the engine was not neglected.
A second settlement, approved in 2024, covers the engines the first left out — the 2.4L Theta II MPI in the 2010–2012 Santa Fe and Tucson and the 2011–2015 Sonata Hybrid, the 2.0L Nu GDI in the 2014–2021 Tucson, 2014–2016 Elantra and 2016–2018 Sonata Hybrid, and the 2012–2017 Veloster — with a 15-year, 150,000-mile rod-bearing warranty where the KSDS update was done by November 2023. A Hyundai dealer can tell you from the VIN whether yours is covered. If it is not, give us the VIN and we’ll match the exact engine.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Hyundai vehicles
Beta and Sirius II four-cylinders
The iron-block Beta II 2.0L in the 2001–2010 Elantra, Elantra Touring, Tiburon and 2005–2009 Tucson, whose solid lifters need periodic valve-lash adjustment, and the Mitsubishi-derived Sirius II 2.4L in the 1999–2005 Sonata and 2001–2006 Santa Fe.
Delta, Sigma and Mu V6s
Hyundai’s V6s before the Lambda: the 2.5L and 2.7L Delta in the 1999–2005 Sonata, 2001–2006 Santa Fe, 2005–2009 Tucson and Tiburon, the 3.5L Sigma in the 2003–2006 Santa Fe and XG350, and the 2.7L Mu in the 2007–2009 Santa Fe and Azera.
Theta, Theta II and Smartstream 2.5L
The aluminum 2.0L and 2.4L fours in the 2006–2019 Sonata, 2010–2012 and 2019–2020 Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Genesis Coupe 2.0T, Sonata Hybrid and Elantra N. The 2.5L Smartstream that replaced them — G4KN, and the turbocharged G4KP — powers the Sonata from 2020, Santa Fe from 2021, Tucson from 2022, Santa Cruz and Palisade 2.5T. The 2011–2019 GDI versions are the ones covered by the recalls and settlements above.
Lambda V6 and Tau V8
The chain-driven 3.3L, 3.5L and 3.8L Lambda in the 2006–2010 Sonata, 2007–2012 Santa Fe and 2013–2019 three-row Santa Fe, Veracruz, Azera, Genesis, Genesis Coupe and 2020–2024 Palisade, with a Smartstream 3.5L in the Palisade from 2025; and the 4.6L and 5.0L Tau V8 in the 2009–2016 Genesis sedan and Equus.
Nu 1.8L and 2.0L
The 1.8L in the 2011–2016 Elantra; the 2.0L GDI in the 2014–2017 Elantra Sport, Coupe and GT, 2014–2021 Tucson and 2016–2019 Sonata Hybrid; the 2.0L MPI in the 2017–2020 Elantra and 2019–2021 Tucson; and its Smartstream update in the Elantra from 2021 and the Sonata Hybrid from 2020.
Gamma, Kappa and the hybrids
The 1.6L Gamma turbo in the 2015–2019 Sonata Eco, Elantra Sport and N Line, 2016–2018 Tucson and Kona, the Smartstream 1.6L turbo in the 2020–2023 Sonata and Elantra N Line, and the G4FT hybrid version in the Santa Fe and Tucson Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid from 2021. The small Kappa serves the Elantra Eco 1.4T, Accent and Venue, and as the 1.6L hybrid engine in the Ioniq, Elantra Hybrid and Kona Hybrid.

FAQ
Used Hyundai engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Hyundai has?
The eighth character of the VIN identifies the engine, and the family code — G4KJ, G6DH and so on — is printed on the engine label and the build sheet. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version, including the model-year changes that matter for fit.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Kia engine fit my Hyundai?
Often. Hyundai and Kia share engine families — the 2001–2006 Optima used the same 2.4L and V6s as the Sonata, and the Tau V8 went into the K900 — but each vehicle gets its own version. We match the exact engine code and model year to the vehicle it is going into, so send us your VIN.
Does a used Hyundai engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
