Jaguar Engines
Finding the right Jaguar engine
From 1997 to 2024 almost every Jaguar V8 was a version of the AJ-V8 — 4.0L, then 4.2L, then 5.0L, with and without a supercharger — and the supercharged 3.0L V6 of 2013–2020 is that engine with two cylinders blanked off. Alongside it sit the Ford-based V6s in the S Type and X Type, a Ford 2.0L turbo, and the Ingenium fours and six from 2017.
The AJ-V8 changed a great deal over those years. The 4.0L alone had three versions, the 5.0L had its timing chains and guides revised three times, and the same engine appears in several states of tune across the XJ, XK, XF and F Type. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Jaguar vehicles
AJ16 straight-six (to 1997)
Jaguar’s last straight-six: the 4.0L AJ16 in the XJ6 (1995–1997) and the XJS to 1996, and the supercharged AJ16S in the XJR (1995–1997).
AJ-V6 2.5L and 3.0L
Jaguar’s own heads on a Ford Duratec block. The 3.0L in the S Type (2000–2008) and X Type (2002–2008), and the 2.5L in the X Type.
AJ-V8 4.0L and 4.2L (1997–2009)
The 4.0L in the XK8 (1997–2002), XJ8 (1998–2003) and S Type (1999–2002), supercharged in the XJR and XKR (1998–2003); then the 4.2L in the XK8 (from around 2003 to 2006), XJ8 (2004–2009), S Type (2003–2008), XK Series (2007–2009) and 2009 XF, supercharged in the XJR, XKR, S Type R and XF SV8. The 4.0L had two well-known faults: Nikasil bore wear on engines built from 1997 to around 2000, which Jaguar answered by replacing engines and switching to cast-iron liners, and plastic timing-chain tensioners on engines to around 2001 that could fail and let the chain jump or break.
AJ-V8 5.0L (2010 on)
The 385 hp 5.0L in the XF (2010–2012), XK Series (2010–2014) and XJ Series (2010–2012), and the supercharged AJ133S — 470 to 575 hp — in the XFR, XKR and XKR-S, the XJ Supercharged and XJR, the F Type V8 (2014–2024), the F Pace SVR (2018–2020) and the XE SV Project 8. Engines built from 2010 to 2013 are known for worn timing-chain guides and tensioners, heard as a tick or knock from the front of the engine; JLR revised the chains, guides and tensioners for the 2010, 2011 and 2014 model years. Recall 12V521000 covers fuel-tank flange cracks on the 2010–2012 XF 5.0.
Supercharged 3.0L V6 (AJ126)
The 5.0L block with two cylinders blanked off, at 340 or 380 hp: XF (2013–2019), XJ Series (2013–2019), F Type V6 (2014–2020), XE 35t and S (2017–2019) and F Pace 35t and S (2017–2020). It shares its architecture with the V8 but is a different engine, and Land Rover used it too.
Ford 2.0L turbo and Ingenium (2013 on)
The Ford-based 2.0L turbo in the XF 2.0T (2013–2015) and the 2017 XE 25t is not an Ingenium. Jaguar’s own Ingenium family followed: the 2.0L P250 and P300 in the XE, XF and F Pace from 2018, the E Pace (2018–2024) and the F Type P300 (2018–2020); the 2.0L 20d diesel in the XE, XF and F Pace (2017–2020); and the 3.0L straight-six mild hybrid in the F Pace from 2021. Recalls to check: 14V181000 and 16V796000 on the 2013–2015 XF 2.0T (charge-air hose and fuel lines) and 18V090000 on the 2018 Ingenium cars (fuel-rail end caps).

FAQ
Used Jaguar engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Jaguar has?
On Jaguars from 2000 on, the eighth character of the VIN is the engine code, read with the model line in positions 6–7 and the model year in position 10, because the same letter means different engines on different models: on an XF, B is the 5.0L and S the 2.0L turbo; on an S Type, D or P is the 4.0L V8 and U the 4.2L. On 1981–1999 cars the engine is the seventh character. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Which 5.0L engines have the timing-chain problem?
Owner complaints centre on 5.0L engines built from 2010 to 2013 — in the XF, XK Series and XJ Series, and in the Land Rovers that share the engine — where worn guides and tensioners cause a tick or knock from the front of the engine. JLR revised the chains, guides and tensioners for the 2010, 2011 and 2014 model years, and updated parts exist. Send us your VIN and we will confirm which build your engine is.
Does a used Jaguar engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
