Chevrolet Engines
Finding the right Chevrolet engine
Chevrolet has built some of the most widely used engines in North America, which helps when you need a replacement: the same small-block V8 went into the Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche, so there are plenty of good used units to choose from.
The catch is that two vehicles from the same year can carry different versions of what looks like the same engine. The 5.3L alone has been built with iron and aluminum blocks, with and without cylinder deactivation, and in flex-fuel form. That is why we ask for your VIN before we quote — its eighth character identifies the engine your vehicle left the factory with.
Engine Families
The engines behind most Chevrolet vehicles
Small-block V8 — Vortec and EcoTec3
The 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L and 6.2L V8s power most full-size Chevrolet trucks and SUVs from 1999 onward. In half-ton trucks the Vortec engines ran until 2013; the direct-injected EcoTec3 family replaced them from the 2014 model year.
4.3L V6
The base engine in full-size trucks and vans for decades. The older Vortec 4300 and the 2014-on EcoTec3 4.3L share a displacement but are different engines and do not interchange.
Ecotec four-cylinders
Four-cylinder engines from the 1.4L turbo to the 2.5L, used in the Cruze, Malibu, Equinox, Trax and Colorado. The Ecotec name covers several different designs that do not interchange, so the engine code matters.
3.6L V6
The V6 used in the Traverse, Impala, Camaro, Colorado and Blazer. It has been built in several versions — LLT, LFX, LGX, LFY and LGZ among them — and one is not a straight swap for another.
Duramax diesels
The 6.6L Duramax V8 in the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD, the 2.8L four-cylinder in the Colorado, and the 3.0L inline-six offered in the Silverado 1500 from 2020.

FAQ
Used Chevrolet engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my Chevrolet has?
The eighth character of your VIN is the engine code. The engine’s RPO code is also printed on the Service Parts Identification label — inside the glove box on older trucks, or in a QR code on the driver’s door pillar from about 2018. Send us the VIN and we will confirm it for you.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Do you supply engines for older Chevrolet models?
Yes. We source engines for Chevrolet cars, trucks, vans and SUVs across a wide range of model years. If your model isn’t listed on this page, send us the details and we will check availability.
Does a used Chevrolet engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
