Finding the right Chevrolet transmission
Most Chevrolet automatics come from a handful of GM transmission families, and each family covers many models. That makes a good used unit easier to find — as long as you match the right version.
Two transmissions with the same name can still differ by engine, drivetrain and model year. A 6L80 from behind a 5.3L is set up differently from one behind a 6.2L, and a four-wheel-drive unit has a different output shaft from a two-wheel-drive one. Give us your VIN and we’ll match it.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most Chevrolet vehicles
4L60-E and 4L80-E — four-speed
The four-speed automatics behind most rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet trucks and SUVs from the 1990s into the 2010s. The heavier 4L80-E was paired with larger engines and used in heavy-duty trucks.
6L80 and 6L90 — six-speed
Six-speed automatics used in the Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and Camaro from the late 2000s. The 6L90 is the heavy-duty version.
8L90 and 8L45 — eight-speed
Introduced for the 2015 model year in trucks, SUVs, the Camaro and the Corvette. The lighter 8L45 is used with smaller engines and in the Colorado.
10L80 and 10L1000 — ten-speed
Ten-speed automatics used in the Tahoe, Suburban and Silverado from the late 2010s. The Allison-branded 10L1000 is fitted to heavy-duty trucks from 2020.
6T40, 6T70 and 9T50 families — front-wheel drive
The automatics in front- and all-wheel-drive models such as the Malibu, Cruze, Equinox and Traverse.
Allison 1000
The automatic paired with the Duramax diesel in Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks from 2001 to 2019.

FAQ
Used Chevrolet transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my Chevrolet has?
The transmission’s RPO code is on the Service Parts Identification label — for example M30 for a 4L60-E or MYC for a 6L80. We can also identify it from your VIN.
Does a replacement transmission need programming?
Often, yes. Six-speed and newer GM automatics have a control module that usually has to be programmed to the vehicle after fitting. Your installer can confirm what your model needs.
Do you supply both 2WD and 4WD transmissions?
Yes. They are different units and do not interchange, so tell us which your vehicle has — or send the VIN and we will check.
Does a used Chevrolet transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
