Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Camaro have?

The 1980–1981 cars used three- and four-speed manuals and three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatics. The third generation (1982–1992) began with a four-speed manual and the three-speed THM 200C, and added the Borg-Warner T-5 five-speed and the 700-R4 four-speed automatic for 1983. Fourth-generation cars (1993–2002) had the T-5 behind the V6, the T-56 six-speed behind the V8, and the 4L60 and then the 4L60-E automatic. There was no Camaro for 2003–2009.

Fifth-generation cars (2010–2015) paired six-speed automatics from GM’s 6L family with Aisin and Tremec manuals; the sixth generation (2016–2024) moved to eight-speed and then ten-speed automatics alongside the Tremec TR-3160 and TR-6060 manuals.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the unit depends on the engine, the trim and the model year — the 2010–2024 SS alone used three different automatics — we confirm from your VIN.

1980–1981Second generation (final years)
Three-speed manualThe base manual; not offered on the Z28.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Manual or automatic

Most Camaros were offered with both, but on some the choice is tied to the engine. The 1987–1992 5.7L V8 came only with the automatic, and on 2010–2015 SS cars the LS3 came only with the manual and the L99 only with the automatic.

Match the engine

From 1993 the transmission follows the engine. Fourth-generation manuals are the T-5 behind the V6 and the T-56 behind the V8. In the fifth generation the V6 has the 6L50 or Aisin manual, the SS the 6L80 or TR-6060 and the ZL1 the 6L90 or TR-6060; sixth-generation V6, SS and ZL1 automatics differ in the same way. A unit from behind a V6 is not right for a V8.

4L60 or 4L60-E

A 1993 Camaro automatic is the 4L60, which sets its shifts hydraulically through a throttle-valve cable. From 1994 it is the 4L60-E, controlled by the engine computer. The two look alike, but one is not a straight replacement for the other.

Which eight- or ten-speed

The sixth generation changed automatics mid-run: the SS went from the 8L90 to the 10L80 for 2019, and the V6 from the 8L45 to a ten-speed for 2020. The 2.0L turbo kept the 8L45 and never received a ten-speed, so the model year matters.

Programming after fitting

The six-, eight- and ten-speed automatics have their own control module, and a replacement usually has to be programmed to the car after fitting. Your installer can confirm what your Camaro needs.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Camaro transmission problems

Shudder and harsh shifts — 8L45 and 8L90, 2016–2019

Camaros with the eight-speed can shudder at a steady cruise as the torque-converter clutch applies, and some shift harshly at low speed. The shudder is caused by the original fluid absorbing moisture, and GM’s remedy is a flush with a moisture-resistant fluid.

Burned clutches — 700-R4, 4L60 and 4L60-E, 1983–2002

The four-speed automatics in third- and fourth-generation cars are known for burning the 3–4 clutch pack and wearing the 2–4 band, which shows up as slipping or flared shifts and then no third or fourth gear. A cracked reaction sun shell is the other familiar failure. Hard launches behind the V8s wear all of these faster.

Throttle-valve cable — 700-R4 and 4L60, 1983–1993

These hydraulically controlled automatics set their line pressure through a throttle-valve cable from the throttle linkage. A cable that is misadjusted or broken leaves the pressure too low, so the clutches and band slip and burn. Check the cable before fitting a replacement, or the new unit will fail the same way.

T-5 wear behind the V8 — 1983–1992

The Borg-Warner T-5 is a light-duty five-speed, and behind the third-generation 5.0L V8s worn synchronizers and broken gears are common, especially in cars driven hard.

FAQ

Camaro transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Camaro have?

It depends on the engine, trim and year. In outline: three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatics from 1980, the 700-R4 four-speed from 1983, the 4L60-E from 1994, six-speeds on 2010–2015 cars, eight-speeds from 2016, and ten-speeds on the ZL1 from 2017, the SS from 2019 and the V6 from 2020, with a manual offered alongside on most cars. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is a 700-R4 the same as a 4L60?

Yes. The 4L60 is GM’s later name for the 700-R4, and the 1993 Camaro’s 4L60 is the same cable-controlled design. The 4L60-E used from 1994 is the electronic version and needs the matching computer and wiring.

My 2016–2019 Camaro shudders at steady speed. Does it need a new transmission?

Often not. The shudder on the 8L45 and 8L90 comes from the torque-converter clutch and moisture in the fluid, and GM’s fix is a flush with a moisture-resistant fluid. Ask a dealer about the fluid change first. A replacement makes sense when the unit is damaged inside, not for the shudder alone.

Does the 2.0L turbo Camaro have a ten-speed?

No. The four-cylinder kept the 8L45 eight-speed for its whole 2016–2023 run. The ten-speeds went to the V6 (from 2020), the SS (10L80, from 2019), the LT1 trim (10L80, from 2020) and the ZL1 (10L90, from 2017).

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
