Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Tahoe have?

The Tahoe has been automatic-only since 1996; its only manual was a five-speed on 1995 two-door 4WD models. The 4L60-E four-speed went behind the gasoline 5.7L, 4.8L and 5.3L V8s from 1995 to 2009, with the heavier 4L80-E behind the 1995–1999 two-door’s 6.5L turbodiesel. The 6L80 six-speed arrived with the LTZ’s 6.2L for 2008 and took over the 5.3L for 2009, the Two-Mode hybrid transmission went in the 2008–2013 Tahoe Hybrid, the 10L80 ten-speed went behind the 6.2L from 2018, and the 10L80 has been behind every engine since 2021.

The table below shows what was fitted when. In 2008 and 2009 the four- and six-speed were sold side by side, so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine and drive type

The 6L80 and the 10L80 each went behind more than one engine, and 2WD and 4WD Tahoes take different units. A transmission from behind a 5.3L is not automatically right for a 6.2L or a Duramax, so we match the engine as well as the transmission.

Gasoline or diesel, 1995–1999

A 1995–1999 Tahoe with the 6.5L turbodiesel has the 4L80-E, a longer and heavier four-speed than the 4L60-E behind the 5.7L, and one is not a direct swap for the other. Tell us which engine yours has.

2008 and 2009 had both

For 2008 the 6L80 came only with the LTZ’s 6.2L and every other Tahoe kept the 4L60-E; for 2009 the 5.3L moved to the 6L80 and only the 2WD 4.8L kept the four-speed. The RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label, or the VIN, settles which yours has.

Hybrid is a different unit

The Two-Mode 2ML70 in the 2008–2013 Hybrid has its electric motors and high-voltage connections built in. It is not a version of the 6L80, and a conventional transmission will not work in a Hybrid.

Programming after fitting

The 6L80 and 10L80 have a control module that usually has to be programmed to the Tahoe once the replacement is in. Allow for that when you book the installation.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and drive type before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Tahoe transmission problems

4L60-E — lost gears, 1995–2009

The 3–4 clutch pack burns out, so third and fourth go and the engine revs on the 2–3 shift, or the reaction sun shell breaks and takes reverse, second and fourth with it. Either usually ends in a rebuild or a replacement unit.

6L80 — wave plate and converter, 2008–2020

The 3-5-R wave plate cracks, which takes out third, fifth and reverse. Separately, a worn torque-converter clutch brings shudder at steady speed and sends friction material through the fluid to the valve body and solenoids.

10L80 control valve — 2021–2022

A worn control valve in the ten-speed can lock the rear wheels. GM recalled 2021 Tahoes with the 3.0L Duramax, and later 2022 Tahoes with Electronic Transmission Range Select, for new transmission control software that watches for valve wear. Check by VIN that the recall work has been done.

FAQ

Tahoe transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Tahoe have?

For 1995–1999 the 4L60-E four-speed behind the 5.7L, the 4L80-E behind the 6.5L diesel, or on some 1995 two-doors a five-speed manual. For 2000–2007 the 4L60-E; for 2008 the 4L60-E, or the 6L80 six-speed with the 6.2L; for 2009 the 6L80 on everything but the 2WD 4.8L; 2010–2020 the 6L80 on 5.3L models and the 10L80 ten-speed on 2018–2020 6.2L models; from 2021 the 10L80 on everything. The 2008–2013 Hybrid has the Two-Mode 2ML70. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Did the Tahoe ever come with a manual transmission?

Only for 1995, and only on two-door 4WD models, which could be ordered with a five-speed manual. Every Tahoe built since then is an automatic.

Will a Silverado or Yukon transmission fit my Tahoe?

Often. The Tahoe shares its 4L60-E, 6L80 and 10L80 with the half-ton pickups (the C/K 1500, then the Silverado 1500), the Suburban and the Yukon, but the unit still has to match your engine, drive type and model year. Send us your VIN.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
