Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Silverado 2500HD have?
This truck’s transmission has always followed its engine. The light-duty 1999–2000 Silverado 2500 put the 4L60-E behind the 5.3L and the 4L80-E or an NV4500 five-speed manual behind the 6.0L, and the 6.0L kept that pair in the 2500HD from 2001. The 8.1L and the Duramax had the Allison 1000, a five-speed to 2005 and a six-speed from 2006, or, through 2006, the ZF S6-650 six-speed manual. From mid-2007 to 2023 the gas V8 used the 6L90 six-speed. The Allison-branded 10L1000 ten-speed replaced the Allison 1000 behind the Duramax for 2020 and the 6L90 behind the 6.6L gas engine for 2024, and an Allison ten-speed stays behind both the gas V8 and the new 8.3L Duramax for 2027.
GM sold the older C/K-body 2500 alongside the new truck through 2000; this page covers the new-body Silverado, and the VIN tells the two apart. The table below shows what was fitted when, and because one model year can have several different units, we confirm from the VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Gas or diesel
The transmission matches the engine: 4L60-E, 4L80-E and 6L90 behind the gas V8s, Allison 1000 behind the 8.1L and the Duramax, and the Allison ten-speed behind the Duramax from 2020 and the gas 6.6L from 2024. A unit from behind a 6.0L is not right for a Duramax of the same year.
4L60-E or 4L80-E on a 1999–2000
Automatic 5.3L trucks of these years have the 4L60-E and automatic 6.0L trucks the 4L80-E. They do not swap: the 4L80-E is longer and heavier and uses different wiring. The glove-box label settles it — M30 is the 4L60-E, MT1 the 4L80-E.
Five- or six-speed Allison
The Allison 1000 was a five-speed through 2005 and a six-speed from 2006, and the six-speed added driver gear selection. Match the year and the engine, not just the name.
Two 2007 trucks
The 2007 Classic is the older GMT800 truck, with GMT800 transmissions such as the 4L80-E; the 2007.5 is the new GMT900, with the 6L90 or Allison and no manual. The VIN tells us which you have.
Check the recall first
A 2020–2022 Duramax truck is under a GM recall for the 10L1000’s control valve. Dealers load new control-module software that watches for excess valve wear, and GM coverage pays for the repair when it finds it. Have a Chevrolet dealer check the truck before you buy a replacement.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Silverado 2500HD transmission problems
Control-valve wear — 10L1000, 2020–2022 Duramax
The transmission’s control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels while driving. GM recalled these trucks for it: the remedy software watches for excess valve wear and limits the truck to fifth gear when it finds it, and GM covers the repair.
Clutch wear and limp mode — Allison 1000, 2001–2019
The Allison is durable at stock power, but the C3 clutch pack is its known weak point, and added power or heavy towing makes the clutches slip. When the controller detects slip it sets a code and puts the transmission in limp mode.
3–4 clutch and sun-shell failure — 4L60-E, 1999–2000
The 4L60-E was built for half-tons, and behind the 5.3L in a loaded 2500 it wears quickly. Burned 3–4 clutches, which take out third and fourth gear, and a broken reaction sun shell are its typical failures.

FAQ
Silverado 2500HD transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Silverado 2500 or 2500HD have?
It follows the engine. On a 1999–2000 Silverado 2500 the 5.3L has the 4L60-E and the 6.0L the 4L80-E or NV4500. From 2001 a 6.0L gas truck has the 4L80-E or NV4500 to the 2007 Classic and the 6L90 from 2007.5; an 8.1L or Duramax has the Allison 1000, five-speed to 2005 and six-speed after, or through 2006 the ZF S6-650 manual; and from 2020 the Duramax has the Allison ten-speed, which the 6.6L gas engine shares from 2024. Send us your VIN and we’ll confirm.
Is there a recall on the 10-speed in my 2020–2022 Duramax?
Yes. GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel Silverado HD trucks because the 10L1000’s control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels. A dealer installs the remedy software free of charge, and if it detects excess valve wear the repair is covered by GM. Check this before you pay for a replacement.
Will an Allison from a GMC Sierra 2500HD fit?
The Sierra 2500HD uses the same transmissions, so a unit of the same year, engine, speed count and drive type is the same part. We match by VIN to be sure.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
