Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Silverado 1500 have?

The Silverado 1500 has moved from four-speed to ten-speed automatics over its four generations, and in most years more than one transmission was offered. Which one your truck has depends on the engine, the trim and whether it is two- or four-wheel drive.

The table below shows what was fitted in each generation. The transmission’s RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label, or your VIN, confirms the exact unit.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Two- or four-wheel drive

A 4WD transmission has a different output shaft and tail housing from a 2WD one, and they do not interchange. Tell us which your truck has.

Match the engine

The same transmission family is built in different versions for different engines. A unit from behind a 5.3L is not automatically right for a 6.2L or a diesel.

Watch the changeover years

Two designs were sold side by side in some years: 2007 “Classic” trucks are the 1999–2006 design, 2019 “LD” trucks are the 2014–2018 design, and 2022 “Limited” trucks are the pre-refresh design. Tell us which you have.

Plan for programming

Six-speed and newer automatics are electronically controlled, and a replacement usually needs programming to your truck before it will shift correctly.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, model year and drivetrain before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Silverado 1500 transmission problems

4L60-E — lost gears

The classic failures on higher-mileage units are a worn 3–4 clutch pack (no third or fourth gear) and a broken sun shell (no second, fourth or reverse).

6L80 — shudder and erratic shifting

Torque converter wear and faults in the control module inside the transmission are the usual complaints, often felt as a shudder at light throttle or harsh, unpredictable shifts.

8L90 — shudder and harsh shifts, 2015–2019

Eight-speed trucks from these years are known for a shudder at steady speed and clunky low-speed shifts. GM introduced a revised fluid in late 2018 that addresses the shudder; the harsh shifting was not resolved until later versions of the transmission.

Ten-speed — check for recalls

In 2024 GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks with the ten-speed over a transmission control valve fault. Check for open recalls with a dealer before paying for a replacement.

FAQ

Silverado 1500 transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Silverado 1500 have?

It depends on the model year and engine. Broadly, 1999–2008 trucks use a four-speed automatic; 2009–2018 trucks use either a four-speed (smaller engines, to 2013) or the six-speed 6L80; and eight- and ten-speed automatics arrive from 2015 and 2019. The RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label confirms it.

Can I replace a 4L60-E with a 6L80?

Not as a straightforward replacement. The six-speed needs different electronics and programming, and often a different driveshaft and crossmember. We recommend replacing like with like.

Will a transmission from a Tahoe or GMC Sierra fit?

Often, yes — those trucks share transmissions with the Silverado 1500. The unit still has to match your engine, drivetrain and model-year range, so send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.

Ready to replace your Silverado 1500 transmission?
