Which transmission does your C/K 1500 have?

Most C/K 1500s are automatics, and the unit changed once in a big way: the hydraulically controlled 700R4, renamed 4L60 around 1990, gave way to the electronically controlled 4L60-E for 1993. The 454 SS used the heavy-duty THM400 and then the 4L80-E. Manual trucks had a Getrag-type five-speed to 1992 and the NV3500 five-speed from 1993.

The 1500 pickup ran from 1988 to 1998 in the US; the 1999 “Classic” continued only as a 2500 or 3500. The table below shows what was fitted when, and because the engine and the weight rating decide the unit, we confirm from the VIN.

1988–1992GMT400, hydraulic automatics
700R4 / 4L60 four-speed automaticCode: MD8Behind the 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L; the same unit, renamed 4L60 around 1990.
THM400 three-speed automatic454 SS, 1990 only; replaced by the 4L80-E for 1991.
4L80-E four-speed automaticCode: MT1454 SS, 1991–1992. Also the automatic behind the 7.4L and the diesels in the 2500 and 3500.

1993–1998GMT400, electronic automatics
4L60-E four-speed automaticCode: M30The standard automatic from 1993; also used in light-duty 2500s.
4L80-E four-speed automaticCode: MT1454 SS to 1993; 2500 and 3500 with the 7.4L and the diesels.
NV3500 five-speed manualWith the 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L, 1993–1998; carried over to the 1999–2006 Silverado 1500.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Hydraulic or electronic

The 700R4/4L60 of 1988–1992 is controlled hydraulically; the 4L60-E from 1993 is controlled by the truck’s computer. They are different units, so the model year decides which we quote.

NV3500, not NV4500

The 1500’s five-speed from 1993 is the NV3500. The NV4500 that arrived in 1992 is the heavier unit for the 2500 and 3500, and it is not the same transmission.

C or K

A C is two-wheel drive and a K is four-wheel drive, and the same transmission is built differently for each. Tell us which you have.

Diesel and 454 SS trucks

The 4L80-E is the automatic GM used behind the 7.4L and the diesels in the heavier trucks, and behind the 454 SS from 1991. For a diesel 1500 we confirm the unit from the VIN rather than assume.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common C/K 1500 transmission problems

3-4 clutch and sun shell — 4L60-E, 1993–1998

A burned 3-4 clutch pack takes away third and fourth, and the engine revs on the 2-3 shift; a broken reaction sun shell takes away reverse, second and fourth. Either usually ends in a rebuild or a replacement unit.

Input bearings — 5LM60 five-speed manual, 1988–1992

The Getrag-type five-speed fitted to the early trucks has a reputation for input bearing failure. It was replaced by the NV3500 for 1993.

Stalling that is not the transmission — 6.5L diesel, 1994–1998

A 6.5L that stalls or will not restart when hot usually has a failed pump-mounted driver (PMD), the most common fault on that engine. Rule it out before suspecting the automatic.

FAQ

C/K 1500 transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my C/K 1500 have?

An automatic 1988–1992 truck has the 700R4/4L60 and a 1993–1998 truck the 4L60-E, with the 454 SS on the THM400 and then the 4L80-E. Manuals are the Getrag-type five-speed to 1992 and the NV3500 from 1993. Send us your VIN and we’ll confirm.

My 1993–1998 truck has lost third and fourth. Is it worth a rebuild?

That is the 4L60-E’s burned 3-4 clutch pack, the most common way these units fail, and it usually ends in a rebuild or a replacement unit. Tell us the year and engine and we’ll quote the matching 4L60-E.

Is there a recall on my transmission?

We know of no powertrain recall or warranty extension for the GMT400 1500. Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to be sure.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
