Mercedes-Benz Transmissions

Finding the right Mercedes-Benz transmission

Mercedes-Benz builds its own automatics, and each one has served the whole range: the 722.6 five-speed in nearly every model from 1998 to about 2005, the 722.9 seven-speed from 2005, and the 725.0 nine-speed since 2014. The five-speed was also licensed to Chrysler as the NAG1 (W5A580) for Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles, and the nine-speed to Jatco for Nissan and Infiniti, which widens the pool of good used units.

The unit a car has depends on the model, engine and year. The seven-speed alone exists in several torque ratings, a “Plus” update from about 2011 and an AMG version with a wet clutch in place of the torque converter. Give us your VIN and we’ll match the right one.

Transmission Families

The transmissions behind most Mercedes-Benz vehicles

722.6 5G-Tronic — 1996–2020

The W5A 330 and W5A 580 five-speed behind nearly every Mercedes-Benz from 1998 to about 2005, kept by the E55 AMG and by the Sprinter from 2002 to 2018; the same design is the Chrysler NAG1 (W5A580) in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge and Chrysler cars and the Crossfire. The conductor plate inside the transmission fails and forces limp mode, and the connector sleeve can leak fluid up the wiring into the control module.

722.9 7G-Tronic — 2005–2019

The seven-speed introduced for 2005 on the E320 CDI and E500 and fitted progressively to the C Class, E Class, S Class, SL Class, SLK, CLS, CLK, GLK Class, ML Series, GL Class and R Class, updated as 7G-Tronic Plus from about 2011; also behind the 2.0L turbo in the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 and the OM651 four-cylinder in the 2014–2018 Sprinter. Failure of the conductor plate — the electro-hydraulic control unit — bringing limp mode, no reverse and speed-sensor codes is widely reported by independent specialists, though Mercedes has run no campaign for it.

AMG SpeedShift MCT — 2009 on

The 722.9 with a wet start-up clutch in place of the torque converter, behind the 6.2L M156 and 5.5L biturbo M157 in the AMG “63” models from 2009. It is a different unit from the torque-converter seven-speed.

725.0 9G-Tronic — 2014 on

The nine-speed, first in the 2014 E350 BlueTEC, then the C Class (2018 on), E Class, S Class (2017 on), GLC Class, GLE Class (2016 on), GLS Class, SLC Class, SL Class and the 2019-on Sprinter; licensed to Jatco as the JR913E for the Nissan Frontier, Titan and Z and the 2025 Infiniti QX80. It is highly integrated and repaired by replacing whole assemblies: if one sensor fails, the mechatronic module is replaced as a unit.

7G-DCT dual-clutch — 2013–2019

The 724.0 seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle in the front-wheel-drive CLA Class, GLA Class and B Class (2013–2019), and the Infiniti QX30.

FAQ

Used Mercedes-Benz transmission questions, answered

How do I find out which transmission my Mercedes-Benz has?

The type plate on the transmission case reads 722.6xx, 722.9xx or 725.0xx, and the vehicle data card in the service booklet lists the transmission code beside the engine code. Send us the full VIN and we will confirm the exact version, because the same seven-speed was built in several torque ratings.

What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt transmission?

A used transmission is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt transmission has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured transmission has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.

Will a W5A580 from a Jeep or Chrysler fit my Mercedes-Benz?

The Chrysler NAG1 is the 722.6 built under license, but each vehicle has its own version. We match the unit to the vehicle it is going into, so send us your VIN.

Does a used Mercedes-Benz transmission come with a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
