Finding the right GMC transmission
GMC uses the same transmission families as Chevrolet, and each family covers many models. That makes a good used unit easier to find — as long as you match the right version.
Two transmissions with the same name can still differ by engine, drivetrain and model year, and a Denali often had a different unit from an SLE with the same engine. Give us your VIN and we’ll match it.
Transmission Families
The transmissions behind most GMC vehicles

The four-speed automatics behind the Sierra 1500 to 2013, the Yukon to 2009, the Envoy and the 2004–2012 Canyon; the 4L80-E in the 1500HD and heavy-duty Sierras.
6L80 and 6L90 — six-speed
Six-speed automatics in the Sierra 1500 (2007–2021) and Yukon; the 6L90 in heavy-duty Sierras.
8L90, 8L45 and 8L80 — eight-speed
The 8L90 in the Sierra 1500 and Yukon Denali from 2015, the 8L45 in the 2017–2022 Canyon and the 8L80 in the Canyon from 2023.
10L80 and 10L1000 — ten-speed
The 10L80 in the Sierra 1500 from 2019 and the Yukon, and the Allison-branded 10L1000 in heavy-duty Sierras from 2020.
Allison 1000
The automatic paired with the Duramax diesel in the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD from 2001 to 2019.
Front-wheel-drive automatics
The 6T70 and 6T75 in the Acadia and Terrain, and the 9T50 and 9T65 nine-speeds that followed them.

FAQ
Used GMC transmission questions, answered
How do I know which transmission my GMC has?
The transmission’s RPO code is on the Service Parts Identification label — for example M30 for a 4L60-E or MYC for a 6L80. We can also identify it from your VIN.
Will a Chevrolet transmission fit my GMC?
Usually, yes — the twins share transmissions. The unit still has to match your engine, drivetrain and model year, so send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Does a replacement transmission need programming?
Often, yes. Six-speed and newer GM automatics have a control module that usually has to be programmed to the vehicle after fitting. Your installer can confirm what your model needs.
Does a used GMC transmission come with a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
