Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Sierra 1500 have?
The Sierra 1500 moved from four-speed to ten-speed automatics over four generations, and the Denali often got the newer unit first — the 4L65-E in 2002 and the six-speed in 2007. In most years the engine and trim together decide which transmission a truck has.
The table below shows what was fitted when. The RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label, or your VIN, confirms the exact unit.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4L60-E four-speed automatic | Code: M30 | 4.3L, 4.8L and 5.3L trucks. |
| 4L65-E four-speed automatic | Code: M32 | Denali with the 6.0L, 2002–2007. |
| 4L80-E four-speed automatic | Code: MT1 | 1500HD trucks with the 6.0L. |
| NV3500 five-speed manual | 4.3L and 4.8L trucks. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4L60-E family four-speed automatic | Code: M30 | 4.3L and 4.8L throughout; 5.3L in 2007–2008 and regular cabs in 2009. |
| 6L80 six-speed automatic | Code: MYC | Denali with the 6.2L from 2007; 5.3L extended and crew cabs from 2009; all 5.3L trucks from 2010. |
| Two-mode hybrid transmission | Sierra Hybrid, 2009–2013. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6L80 six-speed automatic | Code: MYC | 4.3L and 5.3L; the 6.2L in 2014 only. Also the 2019 Limited. |
| 8L90 eight-speed automatic | Code: M5U | 6.2L from 2015; 5.3L on upper trims from 2017; the eAssist 5.3L. |

| 10L80 ten-speed automatic | Code: MF6 | 6.2L and the 3.0L Duramax; the 5.3L on most trims from 2021 and all trims from 2023. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Two- or four-wheel drive
A 4WD transmission has a different output shaft and tail housing from a 2WD one, and they do not interchange. Tell us which your truck has.
Match the engine and trim
In many years a Denali had a different transmission from an SLE with the same engine. A unit from behind a 5.3L is not automatically right for a 6.2L or a diesel.
Watch the changeover years
The 2007 “Classic” is the 1999–2006 design and the 2019 “Limited” is the 2014–2018 design. Tell us which you have.
Plan for programming
Six-speed and newer automatics are electronically controlled, and a replacement usually needs programming to your truck before it will shift correctly.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, model year and drivetrain before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Sierra 1500 transmission problems
4L60-E — lost gears
A burnt 3–4 clutch pack (no third or fourth gear), often from a leaking accumulator checkball, and a broken reaction sun shell (no second, fourth or reverse) are the classic failures.
6L80 — converter and control module faults
The torque converter’s clutch can fail and shed metal that then wears the pump, and the control module inside the transmission can stick a solenoid and leave the truck with no drive.
8L90 — shudder and harsh shifts, 2015–2019
Moisture in the fluid causes a shudder like driving over rumble strips, largely solved by a new fluid introduced in late 2018; harsh shifts from valve-body pressure faults were only fixed in later versions of the unit.
Ten-speed — diesel recall, 2020–2022
GM recalled 2020–2022 diesel trucks with the ten-speed over a control valve that wears and can briefly lock the rear wheels on a downshift. Check by VIN that the software update was done.

FAQ
Sierra 1500 transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Sierra 1500 have?
Broadly: a four-speed automatic to 2008, the six-speed 6L80 on most trucks from 2009 to 2018, and eight- and ten-speeds from 2015 depending on engine and trim. The RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label confirms it.
Will a Silverado 1500 transmission fit?
Usually, yes — the two trucks share transmissions. The unit still has to match your engine, drivetrain and model year, so send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Can I replace a 4L60-E with a 6L80?
Not as a straightforward replacement. The six-speed needs different electronics and programming, and often a different driveshaft and crossmember. We recommend replacing like with like.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
