Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Yukon XL have?
Three transmission lines run through the Yukon XL. The standard 1500 mirrors the Suburban: 4L60-E four-speed to 2008, 6L80 six-speed from 2009–2010, 10L80 ten-speed from 2021. The 2500 had the 4L80-E and 4L85-E, then the 6L90, until 2013. The Denali has had its own: the 4L65-E behind the 6.0L from 2001, the 6L80 from 2007, the 8L90 eight-speed from mid-2015 to 2017 and the 10L80 since 2018.
The table below shows what went where. The Denali changed transmission twice without changing its 6.2L, so we confirm the unit from your VIN.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4L60-E four-speed automatic | Code: M30 | Yukon XL 1500 with the 5.3L. |
| 4L65-E four-speed automatic | Code: M32 | Yukon XL Denali with the 6.0L, 2001–2006. Rated for 380 lb-ft. |
| 4L80-E four-speed automatic | Code: MT1 | Yukon XL 2500 with the 6.0L. Rated for 440 lb-ft. |
| 4L85-E four-speed automatic | Yukon XL 2500 with the 8.1L, 2001–2006. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4L60-E four-speed automatic | Code: M30 | Standard 1500, 2007–2008. |
| 6L80 six-speed automatic | Code: MYC | Denali from the 2007 launch. Standard 1500: optional for 2009, standard 2010–2014. |
| 4L80-E four-speed automatic | Code: MT1 | Yukon XL 2500, 2007 only. |
| 6L90 six-speed automatic | Code: MYD | Yukon XL 2500, 2008–2013. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Denali or standard
In every generation the Denali has had a different transmission from the standard Yukon XL of the same year — 4L65-E against 4L60-E, 6L80 two years before the rest, then 8L90 and 10L80 against 6L80. Tell us which you have.
Which 2015 Denali
Denalis built early in the 2015 model year have the 6L80; later ones the 8L90. The RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label (MYC or M5U), or your VIN, tells us which.
1500 or 2500
The 2500’s 4L80-E, 4L85-E and 6L90 are heavier units built for the 6.0L and 8.1L, and the truck differs in frame and axles too. The quote form lists the Yukon XL 1500 and 2500 separately, so pick the right one.
Programming after fitting
The 6L80, 6L90, 8L90 and 10L80 are controlled by a module that has to be programmed to the Yukon XL. On a 2021–2022 ten-speed the recall software has to be on it as well.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and drive type before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Yukon XL transmission problems
4L60-E — lost gears, 2000–2009
A burned 3–4 clutch pack leaves the Yukon XL without third or fourth, and a broken reaction sun shell takes reverse, second and fourth. Both are common on high-mileage units and usually end in a rebuild or a replacement.
6L80 — wave plate and converter, 2007 on
Transmission shops report the 3-5-R wave plate cracking from fatigue (no third, fifth or reverse, often with drum damage) and torque-converter lining shedding into the fluid, where it contaminates the pump and the control module inside the case. GM has issued no special coverage for these.
8L90 shudder and harsh shifts — Denali, 2015–2017
Eight-speed Yukon XLs built between 2015 and March 2019 are the subject of class actions over torque-converter shudder and rough shifting; GM introduced a moisture-resistant fluid in March 2019. The classes were certified in 2023, decertified on appeal in 2025 and sent back, and there is no settlement. The Tahoe and Suburban, which never had the 8L90, are not involved.
Ten-speed control valve — recalls 24V-797 and 26V-085
Worn control valves can lock the rear wheels. Recall 24V-797 covers 2021–2022 Yukon XLs with the ten-speed (NHTSA’s summary names diesel models) and recall 26V-085, from February 2026, adds 2022 models with electronic range select. The remedy is software that detects the wear roughly 10,000 miles early and holds fifth gear; a transmission that has already failed is replaced under GM special coverage.

FAQ
Yukon XL transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Yukon XL Denali have?
The 4L65-E for 2001–2006, the 6L80 for 2007 to early 2015, the 8L90 from mid-2015 to 2017, and the 10L80 from 2018 on. Send us your VIN and we will confirm, which matters most for a 2015.
Does the 8L90 shudder lawsuit cover my Yukon XL?
Only if it has the 8L90, which on the Yukon XL means a Denali from mid-2015 through 2017. The suits name the 2015–2019 Yukon, Yukon XL and Yukon Denali XL, but as of now there is no settlement and the classes were decertified on appeal, so there is nothing to claim. A 5.3L Yukon XL has the 6L80 and is not part of it.
Will a Suburban transmission fit my Yukon XL?
For a standard Yukon XL or a 2500, usually — the two trucks share the 4L60-E, 6L80, 10L80 and the 2500 units, so the same RPO code from the same generation is normally the same part. Not for a Denali, whose 4L65-E, 8L90 and early 10L80 the Suburban never had. Send us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
