Engine Options
Which engine does your Yukon XL have?
A standard Yukon XL is the Suburban with a GMC badge, and it has used the same engines: the 5.3L LM7 and L59, then LY5, LMG and LC9, then the EcoTec3 L83 and L84, with the 6.0L and 8.1L on the 2500 until 2013. The Yukon XL Denali has been the exception since 2001: a 6.0L LQ4 first, a 6.2L from 2007, and a 6.2L as standard every year since, usually well before the Chevrolets got one.
The table below lists what was offered when. The quote form lists the Yukon XL 1500 and 2500 separately; tell us too if yours is a Denali, and we confirm the engine code from your VIN.

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Denali or standard
A standard Yukon XL has a 5.3L; a Denali has the 6.0L (2001–2006) or a 6.2L (2007 on). The Denali engine was never offered on a standard Yukon XL of the same year, so tell us which you have.
Which 6.2L
L92, L9H, L94, L86 and L87 are five different 6.2Ls. The L9H and L94 are flex-fuel, the L94 adds Active Fuel Management, the L86 brings direct injection, and the L87 has Dynamic Fuel Management. We match by RPO code and year.
1500 or 2500
The 2500 had its own frame, axles and transmissions, and its iron-block 6.0L and 8.1L are not the Denali’s engines even where the displacement matches. Choose Yukon XL 2500 in the quote form if that is what you have.
Deactivation and fuel
From 2007 every standard 5.3L, the L76 and the 2010–2014 Denali L94 have Active Fuel Management; the 2500’s 6.0L does not. Flex-fuel engines are not the same part as gasoline-only ones. A replacement has to match both.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and trim before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Yukon XL engine problems
Piston slap and Castech heads — 5.3L and 6.0L, 2000–2006
The Gen III 5.3L and the Denali’s 6.0L built through 2002 are known for a cold-start knock from the pistons; GM changed the pistons for 2003 and said the noise did no harm. The 2001–2006 5.3L also suffers cracked Castech cylinder heads (casting 706), which lose coolant into the oil and were the subject of a GM bulletin.
AFM lifter failure — 5.3L from 2007, Denali 6.2L from 2010
A stuck lifter on a deactivating cylinder brings a misfire and limp mode, then a wiped camshaft if the truck keeps being driven. It affects the LY5, LMG, LC9 and L76, the Denali’s 2010–2014 L94, and the 2015-on L83 and L86, which a class action filed in 2021 covers. The heads-off repair is why so many of these engines are replaced.
Oil consumption — 5.3L LC9, 2011–2014
The aluminum-block LC9 uses oil between changes through its rings and deactivation system. The 2011–2014 Yukon XL is named in class actions that settled for buyers in California, North Carolina and Idaho and, separately, Oklahoma; owners elsewhere have no cover.
Denali 6.2L recall 25V-274 — 2021–2024
Every 2021–2024 Yukon XL with the 6.2L L87 — which means every Denali of those years — is in a recall for machining debris and a crankshaft finished out of specification, either of which can wreck the rod bearings. A dealer inspection decides between a repair or new engine and a change to 0W-40 oil. NHTSA has since opened an investigation into engines that failed after the fix, so check the VIN before buying an engine.

FAQ
Yukon XL engine questions, answered
Which engine does my Yukon XL have?
A standard Yukon XL 1500 has a 5.3L: LM7 or L59 to 2006, LY5, LMG or LC9 to 2014, L83 to 2020 and L84 since, with the 6.0L L76 as a 2007–2009 option. A Denali has the 6.0L LQ4 for 2001–2006, the 6.2L L92, L9H or L94 for 2007–2014, the L86 for 2015–2020 and the L87 since 2021. A 2500 has the 6.0L or the 8.1L. The 3.0L Duramax has been offered since 2021.
Is the Denali’s 6.0L the same as the Yukon XL 2500’s?
From 2001, yes: both are the aluminum-head LQ4. The 2000 Yukon XL 2500 has the earlier cast-iron-head version at 300 hp, which is not the Denali engine. The transmissions behind them differ, though — 4L65-E in the Denali, 4L80-E in the 2500.
Will a Suburban engine fit my Yukon XL?
For a standard Yukon XL, usually: the two share every 5.3L and the 2500 engines, so an engine with the same RPO code from the same generation is normally the same unit. Not for a Denali — the Suburban 1500 only had a 6.0L on the 2006 LTZ and as a 2007–2009 option, and no 6.2L until the 2019 RST. Send us your VIN.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
