Engine Options
Which engine does your Sierra 1500 have?
The Sierra 1500 shares its engines with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which doubles the supply of good used units. What sets the Sierra apart is the Denali: it had a 6.0L V8 when other half-tons had a 5.3L, and the 6.2L from 2007, two years before the Silverado offered it.
Within a generation the same displacement can mean several engines — the 5.3L alone came in iron-block, aluminum-block, flex-fuel and cylinder-deactivation forms. The table below lists what was offered when; the RPO code on the glovebox label or your VIN confirms which one you have.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4.3L V6 Vortec 4300 | Code: L35 / LU3 | L35 to about 2002; LU3 after. |
| 4.8L V8 Vortec 4800 | Code: LR4 | |
| 5.3L V8 Vortec 5300 | Code: LM7 / L59 | Iron block; L59 is the flex-fuel version. Also in the 2005–2007 Sierra Hybrid. |
| 5.3L V8 Vortec 5300 High Output | Code: L33 | Aluminum block, 2005–2007, 4WD extended cab. |
| 6.0L V8 Vortec 6000 | Code: LQ4 / LQ9 | LQ4 in the 1500HD and early Denali; LQ9 High Output in the 2005–2007 Denali. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4.3L V6 Vortec 4300 | Code: LU3 | |
| 4.8L V8 Vortec 4800 | Code: LY2 / L20 | LY2 to 2009; L20 with variable valve timing from 2010. |
| 5.3L V8 Vortec 5300 | Code: LY5 / LMG / LH6 / LC9 | Iron block LY5 (2007–2009) and flex-fuel LMG; aluminum block LH6 (2007–2009) and flex-fuel LC9 on 4WD. All have Active Fuel Management. |
| 6.0L V8 VortecMax | Code: L76 | 2007–2009. |
| 6.2L V8 | Code: L92 / L9H | Denali from 2007 — before the Silverado had it; SLT from 2009. L9H is the flex-fuel version from 2009. |
| 6.0L V8 two-mode hybrid | Sierra Hybrid crew cab, 2009–2013. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4.3L V6 EcoTec3 | Code: LV3 | |
| 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 | Code: L83 | Also the 2019 Limited. An eAssist mild-hybrid version (L8B) was sold in small numbers on the SLT from 2016. |
| 6.2L V8 EcoTec3 | Code: L86 | SLT and Denali. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Find your RPO code
The RPO code (LM7, L83, L84 and so on) is on the Service Parts Identification label — in the glovebox on older trucks, or in a QR code on the driver’s door pillar from about 2018. The eighth character of the VIN also identifies the engine.
Watch the changeover years
Two designs were sold side by side in some years: the 2007 “Classic” is the 1999–2006 design and the 2019 “Limited” is the 2014–2018 design. Tell us which you have.
Denali and Hybrid engines
Denalis carried the 6.0L and then the 6.2L ahead of other trims, and the 2005–2007 and 2009–2013 Hybrids use engines of their own. The trim matters.
Cylinder deactivation and fuel
Most 5.3L engines from 2007 and the 6.2L from 2014 use Active or Dynamic Fuel Management, and flex-fuel versions use different injectors. Replace like with like.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and drivetrain before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Sierra 1500 engine problems
AFM lifter failure — 2007–2018 V8s with cylinder deactivation
A collapsed lifter on the cylinders that deactivate causes a misfire and a tick, and can take the camshaft with it. The repair involves lifters, guides and often the cam, so a replacement engine is common.
Oil consumption — 2007–2013 5.3L
The AFM 5.3L engines of this generation can burn oil between changes; GM issued a service bulletin and a class action followed.
Cold-start knock and cracked heads — 1999–2006 V8s
Early engines are known for piston slap on a cold start, and some 2001–2006 5.3L engines have cylinder heads that crack and leak oil internally.
Bearing recall — 2021–2024 6.2L
GM recalled 2021–2024 Sierra 1500s with the 6.2L (L87) in 2025 over crankshaft and connecting-rod bearing faults that cause sudden engine failure. Check by VIN that the inspection was done before paying for an engine.

FAQ
Sierra 1500 engine questions, answered
Will a Silverado 1500 engine fit my Sierra 1500?
Usually, yes. The two trucks share their engines, so an engine with the same RPO code from the same generation is normally the same unit. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Which 5.3L do I have?
Check the RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label or send us your VIN. LM7, L59, L33, LY5, LMG, LH6, LC9, L83, L82 and L84 are all 5.3L engines, and they are not all interchangeable.
Do you have engines for the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD?
Yes. Heavy-duty trucks use different engines, including the 6.0L and 6.6L gasoline V8s and the 6.6L Duramax diesel. Choose your model in the quote form, or call us.
Do you have engines for the redesigned 2027 Sierra?
The 2027 Sierra 1500 is a new generation with new 5.7L and 6.6L V8s, so its engines do not interchange with the ones on this page. Call us and we will tell you what we can source.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
