GMC Engines
Finding the right GMC engine
GMC trucks and SUVs are built alongside their Chevrolet twins — the Sierra with the Silverado, the Yukon with the Tahoe, the Canyon with the Colorado — and use the same engines. That doubles the supply of good used units for any GMC.
The catch is the same as for Chevrolet: one displacement can hide several engines, and codes such as LM7, L83 and L84 matter more than the badge. Give us the RPO code or your VIN and we’ll match the exact one.
Engine Families
The engines behind most GMC vehicles
Small-block V8 — Vortec and EcoTec3
The 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L and 6.2L V8s in the Sierra and Yukon: Vortec engines until 2013 in half-tons, and the direct-injected EcoTec3 family from 2014. The Denali has long had the biggest of them.
4.3L V6
The base engine in the Sierra 1500 for decades — the Vortec 4300 to 2013 and a different EcoTec3 4.3L from 2014 to 2021.
Duramax diesels
The 6.6L V8 in the Sierra HD since 2001, the 3.0L inline-six in the Sierra 1500 and Yukon from 2020, and the 2.8L four-cylinder in the 2016–2022 Canyon.
3.6L V6
The High Feature V6 in the Acadia since 2007, the Terrain and the Canyon, in several versions that are not a straight swap for one another.
Four-cylinders — Ecotec and the 2.7L turbo
The 2.4L and 2.5L Ecotec and the 1.5L and 2.0L turbos in the Terrain, Acadia and Canyon, and the 2.7L turbo in the Sierra 1500 from 2019 and the Canyon from 2023.
Atlas inline engines
The 4.2L inline-six in the 2002–2009 Envoy and the inline-four and inline-five in the 2004–2012 Canyon.

FAQ
Used GMC engine questions, answered
How do I find out which engine my GMC has?
The eighth character of your VIN is the engine code, and the RPO code is on the Service Parts Identification label — in the glovebox on older vehicles, or in a QR code on the driver’s door pillar on newer ones. Send us the VIN and we will confirm it.
What is the difference between a used, remanufactured and rebuilt engine?
A used engine is a tested unit taken from a donor vehicle. A rebuilt engine has been disassembled, repaired and reassembled. A remanufactured engine has been restored to like-new condition. Tell us your vehicle and budget and we will recommend the right option.
Will a Chevrolet engine fit my GMC?
Usually, yes. GMC and Chevrolet twins share their engines, so an engine with the same RPO code from the same generation is normally the same unit. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Does a used GMC engine come with a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
