Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Malibu have?

The rear-wheel-drive Malibu of 1980–1983 used Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatics: the metric TH200 and the heavier TH350, each also built in a lockup-converter version. The name then went unused until the front-wheel-drive car of 1997, and every Malibu since has been an automatic. Four-speeds from GM’s 4T40-E, 4T45-E and 4T65-E family served the 1997–2010 cars, the six-speed 6T40 and 6T70 arrived with the 2008 redesign, the 2.0L turbo of the 2016 car had an eight-speed for one year and the nine-speed 9T50 from 2017, and from 2019 the 1.5L turbo was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The 2016–2019 Hybrid has a two-motor drive unit in place of a conventional automatic.

The table below shows what was fitted when. The right unit depends on the engine and the body as well as the model year, so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

Most Malibu years offered more than one transmission, and which one a car has follows its engine: in 2008–2012, for example, the 2.4L used the 6T40 and the 3.6L V6 the 6T70. Tell us the engine as well as the year.

Classic and Limited

Chevrolet kept building the outgoing body next to the new one, as the Malibu Classic in 2004–2005 and 2008 and as the Malibu Limited in 2016. A 2008 Classic has a four-speed, not the six-speed of the new 2008 car, so tell us which body yours is. On the 1980–1983 cars, Malibu Classic is the name of a trim, not of an older body.

Which three-speed automatic — 1980–1983

The rear-wheel-drive cars used both the lighter metric TH200 and the heavier TH350, and each came in a lockup-converter version with a C in its name. They are different transmissions, so we match the unit your car has, not just the number of gears.

Eight-speed or nine-speed behind the 2.0L turbo

The 2.0L turbo had an eight-speed automatic in 2016 and the nine-speed 9T50 from 2017. The two are not interchangeable, so a 2016 car needs the eight-speed.

Six-speed or CVT

The 1.5L turbo had a six-speed automatic through 2018 and a CVT from 2019, and one cannot replace the other. Either unit usually has to be programmed to the car after fitting.

Have your VIN ready

Your VIN gives us the model year, engine and body, so we can confirm the transmission before we quote.

Common Problems

Common Malibu transmission problems

Broken 3-5-R wave plate — 6T40

The wave plate in the 6T40’s 3-5-reverse clutch can crack and break up, often setting code P0776 and causing harsh or flared shifts or a loss of third, fifth and reverse. The fault is mechanical, so a new control solenoid body will not cure it, and the metal it sheds spreads through the transmission.

Control solenoid body (TEHCM) failure — 6T40

The 6T40’s control solenoid valve body, which carries the transmission control module, can fail and leave the car missing gears or stuck in a fail-safe mode with transmission codes set. Check the pan for wave-plate debris before fitting a new one, as debris will quickly ruin the replacement.

FAQ

Malibu transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Malibu have?

A Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed in 1980–1983; a four-speed in 1997–2007, in the 2008 Classic and on some 2008–2010 cars; a six-speed in 2008–2016, with the 6T40 behind the 2.4L and 2.5L, the 6T70 behind the 3.6L V6 and a six-speed behind the 2013–2015 2.0L turbo; a six-speed behind the 1.5L turbo through 2018 and a CVT from 2019; an eight-speed (2016) and then the nine-speed 9T50 (2017–2022) behind the 2.0L turbo; and a two-motor drive unit in the 2016–2019 Hybrid. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Does my 2008–2010 Malibu 2.4L have a four-speed or a six-speed?

It can have either. The six-speed 6T40 was added to the 2.4L partway through 2008 and spread to more trims for 2009, and the four-speed was dropped after 2010. The two do not interchange, so we check your VIN.

Does a 1980–1983 Malibu with the Buick V6 need a different transmission?

Yes. The Buick 231 V6 fitted to California cars uses the Buick-Olds-Pontiac bellhousing bolt pattern, so it needs a transmission with that pattern; one with the Chevrolet pattern, as used behind the 229 V6 and the Chevrolet V8s, will not bolt up. The engine code in the VIN tells us which V6 your car has.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
