Transmission Options
Which transmission does your Traverse have?
Every Traverse has been an automatic: the 6T75 six-speed behind the 3.6L for 2009–2017, the 9T65 nine-speed behind the LFY V6 for 2018–2023 and the 2024 Traverse Limited, a nine-speed behind the RS’s 2.0L turbo for 2018–2019, and an eight-speed behind the 2.5L turbo from the redesigned 2024 model.
The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the old and new designs overlap in 2024, we confirm from your VIN.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Six-speed automatic | Code: 6T75 | 3.6L, front- and all-wheel drive. Shift calibration reworked for 2013. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nine-speed automatic | Code: 9T65 | 3.6L LFY, 2018–2023 and the 2024 Traverse Limited. |
| Nine-speed automatic | 2.0L turbo RS, 2018–2019. We confirm the exact unit from the VIN. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Eight-speed automatic | 2.5L turbo, every trim. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Two 2024 Traverses
The 2018 design was sold as the Traverse Limited for 2024 alongside the redesigned model. The Limited has the 9T65 nine-speed; the new model has an eight-speed. The VIN tells us which you have.
Front- or all-wheel drive
The Traverse comes in front- and all-wheel drive. Tell us which yours is so the unit we quote matches.
Match the engine in 2018–2019
The V6’s 9T65 and the nine-speed behind the RS’s 2.0L turbo are matched to different engines. We confirm the exact unit from the VIN rather than assume they are the same.
Programming after fitting
The six-, nine- and eight-speeds are electronically controlled, and GM reworked the 6T75’s shift calibration for 2013. A replacement needs programming to the vehicle.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drive type and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Traverse transmission problems
Wave plate failure — 6T75, early 2009 builds
The “3-5-R” wave plate in early 6T70/6T75 units was not stress-relieved and can break. GM fitted updated plates during 2009, so the earliest 2009 Traverses are the ones at risk.
Torque-converter shudder — 9T65, 2018 on
A shudder at light throttle in second to sixth gear, often just after a shift, is the 9T65’s known fault. GM bulletin 18-NA-091 (revised May 2021) covers it on the 2018 Traverse and Enclave, and in December 2020 GM ran a program to repair or replace problem units on vehicles under 18,000 miles delivered within the previous 18 months.
Sun gear recall — 2023
Recall 23V172: a sun gear of the wrong size can let the driver-side half-shaft disengage, with loss of drive or a rollaway. Recall 23V042 covers a half-shaft retaining ring on the same year. A 2023 that has lost drive needs both checked before anything else.
Accumulator leak with start/stop — 2018–2020
Recall 20V668: the end-cap bolts on the start/stop accumulator can fail, so transmission fluid leaks out and the vehicle loses propulsion, with a fire risk. A unit that has run dry this way should be checked before it is written off or replaced.

FAQ
Traverse transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my Traverse have?
The 6T75 six-speed for 2009–2017; the 9T65 nine-speed behind the V6 for 2018–2023 and the 2024 Traverse Limited, or a nine-speed behind the RS’s 2.0L turbo in 2018–2019; and an eight-speed from the redesigned 2024 model. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
My Traverse rolled away in Park. Is the transmission faulty?
Check the recalls first. The shift-cable clip on 2009 models (recall 09V073) and the shift-cable adjuster on 2014 models (recall 14V092) were both recalled, and the 2023 sun-gear recall 23V172 can also end in a rollaway. Have any open recall done before anything else.
Is the 9T65 shudder a reason to replace the transmission?
Not on its own. GM bulletin 18-NA-091 sets out a repair, and the December 2020 program repaired or replaced affected units on low-mileage vehicles. A replacement makes sense once the unit has failed outright.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
