Engine Options
Which engine does your Traverse have?
The Traverse has had three engines in three generations: the 3.6L direct-injection LLT V6 across the 2009–2017 Lambda car, the 3.6L LFY V6 with cylinder deactivation and stop/start in the 2018–2023 car (with a 2.0L turbo four on the front-drive RS for 2018–2019), and the 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder LK0 that replaced the V6 for 2024.
The table below lists what was offered when. The old 2018 design was sold as the Traverse Limited alongside the new model for 2024, so for a 2024 Traverse we check the VIN first.
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L direct-injection V6 | Code: LLT | All trims; the LTZ’s dual-exhaust version is rated slightly higher. Some sources list the later LFX from 2013; we confirm from the VIN. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L V6 with Active Fuel Management and stop/start | Code: LFY | All trims, including the 2024 Traverse Limited. |
| 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder | Code: LTG | Front-wheel-drive RS only, 2018–2019. |
| Engine | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder | Code: LK0 | Every trim. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Two 2024 Traverses
The 2018 design was sold as the Traverse Limited for 2024 alongside the redesigned model. One has the 3.6L V6, the other the 2.5L turbo. The VIN tells us which you have.
Which 3.6L
The LLT of 2009–2017 and the LFY of 2018–2023 are both 3.6L direct-injection V6s, but the LFY adds cylinder deactivation and stop/start, and they are not interchangeable. Some sources list the LFX in 2013–2017 cars; we check the VIN rather than assume.
It is the 2.5L, not the 2.0L
The 2024-on Traverse uses the 2.5L LK0 turbo, not the 2.0L LSY turbo fitted to some other GM models. Make sure any engine offered for a 2024-on Traverse is the LK0.
The RS turbo
Only the front-wheel-drive RS of 2018–2019 had the 2.0L turbo; every other 2018–2023 Traverse has the V6. Tell us if yours is an RS.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and body before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common Traverse engine problems
Timing chain wear — 3.6L LLT, 2009–2012
Premature chain wear, flagged by codes P0008 and P0016–P0019 and blamed on a PCV fault and stretched oil-change intervals, is the fault the first-generation Traverse is known for. GM’s Special Coverage 11340C covered 2009 cars for 10 years or 120,000 miles (now expired), Customer Satisfaction Program 10287 reprogrammed the engine computer on about 383,000 vehicles, and bulletin 12-06-01-009A covers 2009–2012.
Stalling recalls — 2014
Two 2014 recalls cause stalling: 14V223 for a fuel-level sensor that misreads, and 14V614 for the chassis-control module. A 2014 Traverse that stalls may need those, not an engine.
Loss of drive that is not the engine — 2018–2023
Recall 20V668 (2018–2020, start/stop accumulator fluid leak) and recall 23V172 (2023, an incorrect sun gear letting a half-shaft disengage) both cause loss of propulsion. Have a dealer check for open recalls before suspecting the engine.

FAQ
Traverse engine questions, answered
Which engine does my Traverse have?
The 3.6L LLT for 2009–2017; the 3.6L LFY, or the RS’s 2.0L turbo in 2018–2019, for 2018–2023 and the 2024 Traverse Limited; and the 2.5L turbo from the redesigned 2024 model. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Will a 3.6L from a GMC Acadia or Buick Enclave fit?
The 2009 Acadia and Enclave were covered by the same timing-chain program as the Traverse, so they share its LLT, but the engine still has to match your model year and code. Send us your VIN.
Is my 2009–2012 timing chain still covered?
No. Special Coverage 11340C for the 2009 car ran 10 years or 120,000 miles and has expired, and the 10287 reprogram was a one-time program. A worn chain today is the owner’s to fix, and an engine damaged by it is the usual reason for a replacement.
Is the engine covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
