Engine Options

Which engine does your Equinox have?

Four generations of Equinox have had four different engine line-ups: a 3.4L V6 (joined by a 3.6L in the Sport) in the 2005–2009 car, direct-injection 2.4L fours and 3.0L and 3.6L V6s in the 2010–2017 car, 1.5L and 2.0L turbo fours and a 1.6L diesel in the 2018–2024 car, and the 1.5L turbo alone in the car sold since 2025.

The table below lists what was offered when. Several of these engines changed code during a generation without changing size, so we confirm from your VIN before we quote.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Which 2.4L

The 2010–2011 LAF and the 2012–2017 flex-fuel LEA are both 2.4L direct-injection engines, and GM made a production change in 2013 aimed at oil consumption. Match the code and the model year.

Which 1.5L

The 2018–2022 LYX and the 2023-on LSD are the same size, but the LSD has a higher-pressure fuel system. Replace like with like.

Flex-fuel or gasoline

The LEA 2.4L and LFW 3.0L are the flex-fuel versions of the LAF and LF1. We match the version your Equinox left the factory with.

Diesel and 2.0L turbo are short runs

The 1.6L diesel was sold only for 2018–2019 and the 2.0L turbo only for 2018–2020, both alongside the 1.5L. Tell us which engine your 2018–2020 Equinox has.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the engine code, model year and drive type before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Equinox engine problems

Oil consumption — 2.4L, 2010–2013

Worn piston rings make these engines burn oil, and low oil pressure and engine failure follow if the level is not watched. The Berman class settlement, approved in November 2019, covered piston replacement on 2010–2012 cars; GM’s Special Coverage 14882 dealt with a blocked PCV orifice on 2010–2014 engines; and a production change arrived in 2013. The 2014–2017 2.4L is outside the settlement, though a separate suit over it was filed in 2023.

Timing chain wear — 3.6L 2008–2009 and 3.0L 2010–2012

GM bulletin 12-06-01-009A lists the Equinox’s LY7, LF1 and LFW among the V6s with premature timing-chain wear, flagged by codes P0008 and P0016–P0019. Owners of the 2.4L also report chain failures to NHTSA, often alongside oil consumption, but we know of no GM program for it.

Overheating — 3.4L, 2005–2009

Owner complaints to NHTSA on the first-generation 3.4L mention overheating and coolant loss, a few ending in head-gasket repairs. This is owner-reported only; we found no GM program covering it.

Fuel-system recalls — 2018–2022

Recall 18V358 covers the 2018 car’s high-pressure fuel pump, and recall 23V013 covers 2021–2022 cars whose fuel-pump module can fail and stall the engine. A stall is not always the engine; have a dealer check for open recalls first.

FAQ

Equinox engine questions, answered

Which engine does my Equinox have?

Broadly: a 3.4L (or the Sport’s 3.6L) for 2005–2009; a 2.4L, 3.0L or 3.6L for 2010–2017; a 1.5L turbo, 2.0L turbo or 1.6L diesel for 2018–2024; and the 1.5L turbo from 2025. The eighth character of the VIN identifies it, or send us the VIN and we will confirm.

My 2010–2013 2.4L burns oil. Is there still a free fix?

Possibly. The Berman settlement covered piston replacement on 2010–2012 cars and GM’s Special Coverage 14882 covered the PCV fix on 2010–2014 engines; ask a dealer whether your car still qualifies. The 2014–2017 engine was not part of the settlement. An engine that has run low on oil and lost oil pressure is the usual replacement.

Did the Equinox come with a diesel?

Yes, once: a 1.6L turbo-diesel (LH7) for 2018–2019 only. Tell us if yours is a diesel.

Is the engine covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every engine we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
