Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Equinox have?

The Equinox has always been an automatic, and the unit has followed the engine: an Aisin five-speed behind the first 3.4L, GM’s 6T-family six-speeds through the second and third generations, a nine-speed behind the 2.0L turbo, and from 2025 a CVT on front-wheel-drive cars with an eight-speed on all-wheel drive.

The table below shows what was fitted when. Because the same model year can have two different units, we confirm from your VIN.

2005–2009First generation (Theta)
Aisin five-speed automaticCode: AF33-53.4L V6, all years.
Six-speed automaticCode: 6T703.6L Sport, 2008–2009.
2010–2017Second generation
Six-speed automaticCode: 6T452.4L, all years.
Six-speed automaticCode: 6T703.0L V6 2010–2012 and 3.6L V6 2013–2017.
2018–2024Third generation
Six-speed automatic1.5L turbo and 1.6L diesel. A GM 6T-family unit; we confirm the exact version from the VIN.
Nine-speed automaticCode: 9T502.0L turbo, 2018–2020.
2025–presentFourth generation
Continuously variable transmission (CVT)Code: MRGFront-wheel-drive cars.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Match the engine

In most years the Equinox had two transmissions at once, one per engine. A 6T45 from behind a 2.4L is not right for a V6, and the 2.0L turbo’s nine-speed is not the 1.5L’s six-speed.

Front- or all-wheel drive

From 2025 the drive type decides the transmission: a CVT on front-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic on all-wheel drive. On earlier cars too, tell us which you have so the unit matches.

Which six-speed

The 6T45 behind the 2.4L, the 6T70 behind the V6s and the 6T-family unit behind the 1.5L turbo and diesel are different units from the same family. They are not interchangeable.

Programming after fitting

These automatics are electronically controlled, and a replacement needs programming to the vehicle before it will shift correctly.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drive type and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Equinox transmission problems

Wave plate failure — 6T70, 2008 Sport

Early 6T70 units have a “3-5-R” wave plate that was not stress-relieved and can break; GM fitted updated plates from 2009. That puts the 2008 Equinox Sport’s 6T70 among the units at risk.

Driveshaft fracture — 2018

Recall 17V516 covers 2018 cars whose right-front intermediate driveshaft can fracture, with loss of propulsion or a rollaway. A 2018 Equinox that has lost drive may need the recall, not a transmission.

Accumulator leak with start/stop — 2018–2020

Recall 20V668: the end-cap bolts on the transmission’s start/stop accumulator can fail, so fluid leaks out and the car loses propulsion, with a fire risk. Have a dealer check the recall before paying for a transmission.

CVT complaints — 2025 on

A 2026 class action (Williams v. GM) alleges slipping, shudder and loss of drive from the CVT’s valve body, drive chain, pulleys and bearings on recent GM cars including the Equinox. It is unproven, and there is no settlement or recall.

FAQ

Equinox transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Equinox have?

It follows the engine: the Aisin AF33-5 behind the 3.4L and the 6T70 behind the Sport’s 3.6L to 2009; the 6T45 behind the 2.4L and the 6T70 behind the V6s for 2010–2017; a six-speed behind the 1.5L turbo and diesel and the 9T50 behind the 2.0L turbo for 2018–2024; and a CVT or eight-speed from 2025. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

My 2018 Equinox lost drive suddenly. Is the transmission gone?

Check the recalls first. Recall 17V516 (driveshaft) and recall 20V668 (start/stop accumulator, 2018–2020) both cause loss of propulsion and are fixed free. If the recall work is done and the unit is still faulty, we can quote a replacement.

Does the 2025 Equinox have a conventional automatic?

Only with all-wheel drive, which has an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive cars have a CVT. The two are not interchangeable, and we match by VIN.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
