Transmission Options
Which transmission does your C10 and K10 have?
The square-body half-ton was sold with a column-shift Saginaw three-speed as its basic manual, the cast-iron SM465 four-speed as the heavy manual and a New Process four-speed overdrive manual in the 1980s, and with three automatics: the TH350 (the lockup TH350C from 1981), the heavier TH400, and from 1982 the 700R4 four-speed overdrive. The GMC C15 and K15 of 1973–1980 and the C1500 and K1500 of 1981–1987 use the same units.
The table below shows what was offered when. Which unit a truck has depends on its engine, year and whether it is a C10 or a K10, so we confirm from the VIN before we quote.
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Saginaw three-speed manual | Code: ZW4 | Column shift; the standard transmission with the sixes and small V8s. |
| SM465 four-speed manual | Code: M20 | The heavy-duty “Muncie” truck four-speed, with an unsynchronized 6.55:1 first gear. Not the Muncie car four-speed. |
| TH350 three-speed automatic | Code: M38 / M49 | Behind the sixes and small-block V8s. |
| TH400 three-speed automatic | Code: M40 | The heavy-duty automatic; on a half-ton most often behind the 454. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Saginaw three-speed manual | Code: M15 / MM3 | Same unit, recoded M15 for 1981 and MM3 from 1985; on some trucks. |
| SM465 four-speed manual | Code: M20 / MM4 | Recoded MM4 from 1984. |
| NP833 four-speed overdrive manual | Code: MM7 | New Process unit with a 0.73:1 top gear, from 1982, on some light-duty trucks. |
| TH350C three-speed automatic | Code: MV4 | Lockup-converter TH350, 1981–1986; the plug on the left of the case identifies it. |
| TH400 three-speed automatic | Code: M40 | Heavy-duty automatic; on some trucks, including diesels. |
| 700R4 four-speed overdrive automatic | Code: MD8 / MX0 | From 1982, first with the 6.2L diesel and a general option from 1983. Lockup converter; 27-spline input to 1983, 30-spline from 1984 behind small-block V8s. |
| Transmission | Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| SM465 four-speed manual | Code: MM4 | |
| NP833 four-speed overdrive manual | Code: MM7 | On some trucks. |
| TH400 three-speed automatic | Code: M40 | On some trucks. |
| 700R4 four-speed overdrive automatic | Code: MD8 / MX0 | Lockup now controlled by the engine computer; the 1987 units carry the later internal updates. |

Before You Order
What to check before you order
Three different three-speed automatics
The TH350, the lockup TH350C and the TH400 are all three-speeds. The TH350C has an electrical plug on the left of the case; the TH400 case is about 24-3/8 in long against the TH350’s 21-3/4, it uses an electric kickdown switch where the TH350 has a cable, and it was built in both Chevrolet and Buick-Olds-Pontiac bolt patterns — the truck needs the Chevrolet one.
Which 700R4
The 1982–1983 units have the 27-spline input shaft that failed often; from 1984 the small-block V8 units got a 30-spline shaft and the internals were updated through 1987. Ask for a 1984-or-later unit at least and a 1987-or-later one by preference. The truck version has the thicker “K” case and a square pan, and on a 1987 truck the lockup clutch is controlled by the engine computer.
2WD or 4x4
A C10 automatic has a 2WD tailhousing; a K10 unit has the 4WD adapter and short output. On the SM465 the 2WD output is a 35-spline shaft with a yoke, the 4WD output is 10-spline on early trucks and 32-spline on later ones, and the input is 1-1/8 in on standard units or 1-1/2 in on heavy-duty ones.
Match the engine and flywheel
The Chevrolet V8 bellhousing pattern is shared by the small block, big block, sixes, 4.3L V6 and 6.2L diesel, so the pattern itself rarely blocks a swap; the SM465 uses the four-bolt Muncie/Saginaw manual pattern. If a manual comes with its flywheel, note that 1986–1987 small blocks with the one-piece rear main seal take a flywheel with a different bolt pattern and external balance.
Have your VIN ready
With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine, drive type and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.
Common Problems
Common C10 and K10 transmission problems
700R4 input shaft — 1982–1983
The original 27-spline input shaft is a common failure point. Small-block V8 units got a 30-spline shaft from 1984, which is the earliest version we recommend.
700R4 early internals — 1982–1986
The early units had teething problems and GM updated parts from the ring gear to the pump housing between 1984 and 1987. The 1987-and-later units are regarded as refined and reliable, which is why we steer buyers to them.
TH350 center support — 1973–1986
The TH350 and TH350C have a thin center support and case splines, and excess end play between the pump and the center support lets the direct-clutch drum wobble.

FAQ
C10 and K10 transmission questions, answered
Which transmission does my C10 or K10 have?
The 700R4 is the only four-speed automatic and has a square pan. Of the three-speeds, the TH400 case is longer and has an electric kickdown switch where the TH350 has a cable, and a TH350C has an electrical plug on the left of the case for the lockup converter. The SM465 is a cast-iron four-speed with an unsynchronized first gear. Send us your VIN and the engine and we’ll confirm.
Should I replace a 1982 700R4 with a unit of the same year?
No. The 1982–1983 units have the 27-spline input shaft, and the internals were updated year by year to 1987. A 1984-or-later 30-spline unit is the minimum and a 1987-or-later one is the better choice; tell us the year of the truck, because the 1987 trucks control the lockup clutch through the engine computer.
Will a transmission from a 1988 Chevrolet C1500 or GMC Sierra fit my 1987 R10 or V10?
The 1988 trucks on the new body kept the 700R4 and TH400, so the units are the same families, and 1987 was the only year the two bodies were sold side by side. The 2WD or 4x4 output and the year still have to match, so give us your VIN.
Is the transmission covered by a warranty?
Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
