Transmission Options

Which transmission does your Corvette have?

The Corvette’s transmissions have followed its generations. The last C3s of 1980–1981 had a Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 three-speed automatic or a Borg-Warner Super T-10 four-speed manual, and the 1982 car the new 700-R4 four-speed automatic only. The C4 paired the 700-R4, and from 1994 the electronic 4L60-E, with the Doug Nash “4+3” manual to 1988 and the ZF six-speed from 1989. Since 1997 there have been a 4L60-E or T-56 six-speed manual in the C5, the 6L80 six-speed automatic with T-56 and later TR-6060 manuals in the C6, the 8L90 eight-speed automatic and TR-6070 seven-speed manual in the C7, and a single Tremec TR-9080 eight-speed dual-clutch in the mid-engined C8, which has no manual at all.

There was no 1983 model-year Corvette, so the C3 ends with the 1982 cars and the C4 starts with the 1984. The table below shows what was fitted when. Several changeovers fall inside a generation — the 1982 car lost the manual, 2005 cars have the 4L65-E and 2014 cars the 6L80 — so we confirm from your VIN.

Before You Order

What to check before you order

Manual or automatic

Most Corvettes came with either. The exceptions: 1980 California cars and every 1982 car were automatic only; the 1990–1995 ZR-1, the 1996 Grand Sport, the C5 Z06 and the C6 Z06 and ZR1 were manual only; and the C8 has one transmission, the dual-clutch, in every trim.

Changeover years, 1980–1996

1981 is the last year of the C3 four-speed manual, and 1982 cars have the 700-R4. The C4 manual changed from the Doug Nash 4+3 to the ZF six-speed for 1989, and the automatic from the cable-controlled 700-R4 to the electronic 4L60-E for 1994.

Changeover years, 2005–2015

2005 cars have the 4L65-E four-speed, 2006–2013 cars the 6L80; 2014 cars have the 6L80, 2015–2019 cars the 8L90. The manual changed from the T-56 to the TR-6060 for 2008. A one-year difference can mean a different unit.

Z06 and ZR1 versions

The C6 ZR1’s TR-6060 has a twin-disc clutch, and the C8 Z06’s dual-clutch has a 5.56:1 final drive. Tell us the trim as well as the year.

Programming after fitting

The 6L80, 8L90 and C8 dual-clutch each have their own control module, and a replacement needs programming to the car after fitting.

Have your VIN ready

With the VIN we can confirm the transmission, engine and model year before we quote, which avoids ordering the wrong version.

Common Problems

Common Corvette transmission problems

Shudder and harsh shifts — 8L90, 2015–2019

A shudder at steady speed from the torque-converter clutch, and harsh low-speed shifts. GM traced the shudder to the original fluid absorbing moisture, and its remedy is a flush with a revised, moisture-resistant fluid. A unit that keeps shuddering after the flush, or has torque-converter or internal damage, is the one to replace.

Burned 3–4 clutches — 700-R4 and 4L60-E, 1982–2004

The 3–4 clutch pack is the weak point of this four-speed family behind a V8: the transmission flares or slips on the 2–3 shift and then loses third and fourth gear. On 1982–1993 cars a misadjusted or broken throttle-valve cable lowers line pressure and burns the clutches quickly, so the cable must be set correctly on any replacement.

FAQ

Corvette transmission questions, answered

Which transmission does my Corvette have?

A Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 or Super T-10 four-speed in a 1980–1981 C3, and the 700-R4 in a 1982; in a C4, the 700-R4 to 1993 and the 4L60-E from 1994, with the Doug Nash 4+3 manual to 1988 and the ZF six-speed from 1989; a 4L60-E or T-56 in a C5; a 4L65-E (2005) or 6L80 (2006–2013), with T-56 or TR-6060 manuals, in a C6; a 6L80 (2014) or 8L90 (2015–2019), or the TR-6070 manual, in a C7; and the TR-9080 dual-clutch in every C8. Send us your VIN and we will confirm.

Will a 4L60-E replace the 700-R4 in my 1984–1993 Corvette?

Not directly. The 700-R4 is hydraulically controlled, with a throttle-valve cable from the engine, while the 4L60-E needs the electronic control of a 1994-on car. We supply the unit your Corvette was built with.

Does the C8 Corvette have a manual?

No. Every C8 uses the Tremec TR-9080 eight-speed dual-clutch, with a different final drive in the Z06.

My 2015–2019 Corvette shudders at steady speed. Do I need a new transmission?

Often not. The 8L90 shudder comes from the torque-converter clutch and moisture in the fluid, and GM’s remedy is a flush with a moisture-resistant fluid. Ask a dealer about the fluid change first; a replacement is for units with internal damage.

Is the transmission covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every transmission we sell is covered by warranty, and extended cover is available at extra cost. The full terms are in our Warranty Policy.
